I still stand by the anime fandom as a whole has mostly lackluster fics.

I've read plenty of bad anime fics. But there are a couple I remember were really good.

I can't think of any that stand out in my mind as being really great writing but there were plenty that were entertaining and now I'm feeling really nostalgic for my old days reading Ranma fic.

Agreed. I wouldn't say anime has the most awful fics, but most of them were pretty so-so in every anime fandom I've tried so far. The size of the fandom doesn't seem to matter much, either.

the only anime fic i ever would hold up as good writing in comparison to other fandom's greats were ronsard and some of her crew's naruto stories, particularly their itachi/shisui, and to a lesser extent, hopechan's writing in code geass.

i've never read anything else that even came close, sadly.

It has such a good setting for plotty conspiracy/dystopia fics (other settlements? I won't buy the conglomeration presented is the only one), or hell, anything else. However, it's full of AU's :( . Not even good ones, tried to read the most popular one about a mental health ward, but the author didn't even bother to use wikipedia. FS posters say that quality is in fics with Erwin ... but I hate him ... soo.... [/rant]

What's the point in investing tons of energy writing plotty conspiracy fix when we don't know most of the plot and there's a high chance of it all getting jossed next chapter?

Well, it is an anime fandom we're talking about. Anime fandom in general is never known for quality fanfic.

I know it's not what you're saying and I know that, from my experience, I've read a lot of bad anime fanfics, but I think it's kind of depressing when people state this opinion because I think it inadvertently suggests that it's pointless to try. I'm not in a lot of anime/manga fandoms but as a fic reader, I'd like to see more quality fics in the fandoms I do enjoy and the only way for that to happen is for people to either continue writing for that fandom and improve or for more talented writers to feel relieved of the stigma that comes from writing fic for an anime.

This was a pretty long response and I hope you don't take it the wrong way.

i read some good ones back in code geass days. can't say i have ever found any for any other anime fandoms though in all my years. i try to write for one of my own favorite shows, but it's a bit disappointing and feels unrewarding because there never seems to be readers.

But honestly I fell into the same trap, OP. I was in small-but-mature fandoms and while I knew that getting into a popular fandom meant there'd be a lot of crap, I thought there'd be enough good stuff to keep me happy.

Hahahaha NOPE.

Now don't get me wrong, there's a few amazing gems out there, but 99% of fic is stupid fluff AUs that are either college/coffee shop/some other stupid banal shit or whatever 'hot' or 'cool' profession the writer likes.

For fuck's sake they have a tumblr dedicated to shitty Jean/Marco AUs. Go have a look, I dare you. It's the most boring and shallow nonsense ever. There might be one or two interesting ideas but I will bet that the author won't do anything interesting with it and just use it as window-dressing for anime boys kissing.

Goddamn it this was an anime with one of the most amazing premises ever with a bunch of really good characters, WHY IS ALL THE FIC SO BORING AND CLICHE.

"Boring and shallow," "window-dressing for anime boys kissing". I think you just summed up the Jean/Marco pairing perfectly. And most of what I've seen of the Shingeki fandom.

Oh. OH. THE COLLEGE AUs! In fandoms that are not American. That irks me as someone not from US. I understand that authors want to write relatable stuff. But. Too much. Never understood the appeal of "Coffee Shop AUs" - yes, I thought they meant Amsterdam ones.

Then there's more problematic AUs. Mentioned the one about a mental ward above, but I've seen sex worker ones as well, disability ones and so on. It would be grand if they've been well researched but nooooopeeee.

This makes me sad, because I've been working up to writing something long and plotty, but everyone will have given up on the fandom by the time I get there!

It makes me sad bc I write for the fandom now and try to come up with interesting stuff but according to everyone here I write meaningless garbage.

I agree with you OP. I've been in this fandom as it was growing and hoping that it would get better, but it only got worse. Unless your in a small corner of fandom with people who like the same characters and have the same headcanons, which I am.

Unfortunately what makes up the majority of fanwork is just shit.

I am extremely disappointed in SnK fandom as a whole. It became extremely popular and there is so much you can do with it and so many characters you can explore. Yet, and the the fandom.... *sigh* OH WELL.

Yet more proof that popularity =/= quality

If you do some real digging there are a few gems. You just have to dig really really deep, like to the bottom of the wall. And uh, Levi/Eren probably isn't the place to look.

But there was one I read with Levi and Hanji going through the trauma after Wall Maria was attacked that I really liked. Don't ask me to find it again I doubt I could.

Oh boy, I'd love give recs but I'm on the same boat.

I think it's harder to find quality gen fic because almost everything is shipping. Also it's harder to search for unless it gets rec'ed to you.

There is definitely more in the way of slash fic, though most of it is the bad ooc stuff.

I have a hard time finding femslash except YumiKuri, though even then it's not that abundant as you think it would be.

If your looking for het pairing fic, you'll probably be disappointment. It seems nobody likes het pairings in SnK, lol. I think the only het pairing that has a decent following is LeviHan and even then I suspect it's only because Levi is the most popular character.

Come to think of it the majority of fics I see while searching are Levi ships. No other character/ships get as much love.

I think I just depressed myself.... :(

Completely Off Topic, and just a piece of advice here, but I think you should read the manga (or at least start from where the first season of the anime left) I am only suggesting this because you said you checked fics after finishing the series (so I assumed you are just like me, wait until you have finished reading/watching sth to avoid getting spoiled).

I have yet to complete reading the manga, but I enjoyed the anime a great deal (and made a stupid roleplay once on a videogame board I go to that was enjoyed by many for a while). After finishing out the anime, I took a curious glance into the fanfic section (forget if it was fanfiction.net or Ao3, I think it was the latter) and just looked at *summaries.*

I was baffled in this specific way: "Okay, we've got a high-drama series with warriors fighting gruesome giants and excitement everywhere and... people are writing office-romance aus? Huh?"

I was just sincerely baffled. Maybe it's because most au fic I've encountered in other fandoms tries to make a world *more* exciting or finds a just-as-exciting kind of world with similar themes... and AoT/SnK fans are looking to... what, boring-fy things. Keep in mind I haven't actually read any of the fics, I'm just baffled by the summaries I've seen.

I'm a fanfiction writer myself, and a gen-fic writer who likes drama, horror and a bit of gore... I might actually do well writing an SnK fic, but, I just haven't gotten inspiration/ideas for that particular fandom, at least not any idea that's not a crossover that's way, way too stupid to do.
