are my legs weird or am i being paranoid

Is it normal to have some of your toes go numb when you go out for a walk (and it's not even that cold), and for your legs to become red after said walk?

Re: are my legs weird or am i being paranoid

... I don't think so. If it's a pins-and-needles sort of feeling, you might be having circulation/nerve pinch issues. Are you diabetic/pre-diabetic/have a family history of diabetes? Circulation issues usually go hand in hand with foot problems.

Either way, it's definitely something to mention to your doctor.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not diabetic and no one in my immediate family is. It itches a bit when I rest my legs after the walk but it's not the pins-and-needles kind.
I forgot to mention that when I went to donate my blood it was refused because it didn't have enough iron in it to qualify. I don't know if it's linked though.

Yeah I guess I should see a doctor about it. The thing is, though, I don't have a doctor, because I never have to consult usually; I'm never sick. So I'd rather avoid to go if I can.

It's linked, but try to fix it through diet, first. The pills can have the side effect of constipation, so I never bothered

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron#Health_and_diet

Do try and eat the healthy options on the list, just because Wikipedia says most breakfast cereals have been enriched with it, doesn't mean you'll get your RDA from a huge bowl of Sugar Crisps or smth.

Thanks for the link! So steak and tuna it is then. I don't think I'd know where to find 'fortified' bread or cereals anyway.

The grocery store. Damn near all national commercially sold bread and cereal is fortified with extra vitamins and minerals. Dark leafy greens like spinach are also an excellent source of iron.

Eh, the thing is, I'm not American, so I'm not sure if it's the same in my country. I'll keep my eyes open though.

Eat your leafy greens dressed with a little olive oil and plenty of lemon juice; both fat and vitamin C help you absorb the non-heme iron provided by plant sources.

Don't just think iron-deficiency causes anemia; it can have other causes too like vitamin deficiency of folate and vitamin b-12. I know people who couldn't get their anemia to get better until they started taking these vitamins and they tried iron pills for years. You may want to try/look into this.

"Vitamin-deficiency anemia may occur when vitamin B12 and folate are deficient. These two vitamins are needed to make red blood cells. Conditions leading to anemia caused by vitamin deficiency include:

Megaloblastic anemia: Vitamin B12 or folate or both are deficient
Pernicious anemia: Poor vitamin B12 absorption caused by conditions such as Crohn's disease, an intestinal parasite infection, surgical removal of part of the stomach or intestine, or infection with HIV
Dietary deficiency: Eating little or no meat may cause a lack of vitamin B12, while overcooking or eating too few vegetables may cause a folate deficiency.
Other causes of vitamin deficiency: pregnancy, certain medications, alcohol abuse, intestinal diseases such as tropical sprue and celiac disease" from http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/understanding-anemia-basics?page=2

It is for me. Especially the toe thing. Sometimes it's just a matter or re-lacing or re-tying my shoes but sometimes it's just a weird thing my feet do.

Red: if I'm wearing shorts I've noticed that from time to time, yeah. Not an every time thing, but it happens.

Well I'm relieved to see I'm not the only one. I don't anyone else with the same issue irl. It's not anything serious then?

ayrt

My mother and sister both have the same problem occasionally. I think it's just a blood flow or circulation thing? Ours is all on the low side, so that could be it but I've never mentioned it to a doctor or anything.

If i go out and walk quickly or for longer than usual (walking around a neighborhood or zoo or something) or am walking in chilly air, my legs get flushed like that, and also a bit itchy. Personally, i always put it down to me moving = better circulation = little capillaries and whatnot pumping full of blood and all my muscles and skin getting more blood-flow than they normally do when just sitting.

Re - iron. I've been anemic all my life, so who knows, maybe it's a factor. You can try a tincture if regular iron supplements bother your stomach (they mostly bother everyone). http://herblore.com/products/iron-tonic-tincture This is one i'm getting, myself. It's a tincture (dissolved in alcohol) of dandelion root, yellow dock, and nettle. It's something recommend to pregnant women and it helps with the whole constipation thing.

Take it with oj (vitamin c helps you to absorb iron) and leave off any milk/dairy for a couple hours (calcium inhibits your ability to absorb iron).

You're not weird! It's okay. :)

Poor circulation won't kill you overnight, but it's not great. It means your extremities aren't getting the blood they need, and they're also not getting all the stuff blood carries-- such as oxygen. In diabetics, tingling/numbness in the feet is very common. It leads to tissue damage and in extreme cases, requires amputation.

The problem is that nobody here can tell you for sure it's serious or not serious. Symptoms like this are general and can apply to a lot of medical issues. It could be nothing... or it could be something that needs dealing with right away. You won't know unless you see a doctor and rule out all the serious stuff.

I also get numb feet if I lace my shoes up too tight, especially at the top.

I can't wear rings either for more than a few hours as that does the same. Even very loose rings. I also get shooting pains down my tendons. There's nothing wrong with my circulation, it's just a thing I have.

It comes and goes, some years I have it and some years I don't.

Sounds like a circulatory issue. Not necessarily a big deal, but maybe get it checked out and check ways to improve circulation?

That might be it. In any case, I'll look up ways to improve circulation on google. Thanks anon!

I saw above that you have low iron in your blood. Yes, that is indeed related to poor circulation, so that's probably the cause. Best of luck figuring it out.

Maybe Raynaud's syndrome?

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/raynauds-disease/basics/definition/con-20022916

It won't hurt you to get it checked out.

No. It's not. Are you experiencing any swelling? Do you get little red spots on them that won't go away? If you press the skin/flesh around your ankles, does a little indentation remain?

How about your hands? Does the same thing happen with them when the temperature changes?

Re: are my legs weird or am i being paranoid

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-02-26 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
There's no swelling. There are red spots but they usually go away within half an hour. I haven't checked the pressing thing, I'll do it next time and see.
My hands are not affected, or not as much anyway. They get a little redder when it's cold (like everybody else's I suppose).

Re: are my legs weird or am i being paranoid

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-02-26 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Disclaimer: I can't accurately give any medical advice over the internet. No one can, and anyone who tells you otherwise is someone to be avoided.

However, from what you're describing it sounds to me like there's a circulation issue happening here, and the redness/spots you're seeing are probably a result of excess blood forcing interstitial fluid out into tissues as it pools. Especially around capillaries.

I can't say if it's an issue with the veins in your legs, but that would be my first guess.

I would advise you to see a physician if the spots persist or worsen; if you experience any dizziness, vertigo, or fainting; or if after you have been for a walk the flesh around your ankles does form an indent that doesn't go away when you press it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll double-check next time I take a walk and go see the family doctor if I experience any of the things you described.

No problem! I sincerely hope that with a little more exercise this problem just disappears for you.
