TW: Teeth/Dentist I guess?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
My sister was supposed to get 4 of her bottom right teeth pulled today. This is what she has been telling me (and what she says the dentist told her).

The dentist drugged her up pretty good because of how stressed she has been. He gave her two valium and one halcion before she got there. And nitrous oxide while she was there. The procedure took four hours.

My mom talked to the nurse and they told her how to care for the teeth and where to pick up her pain pills. But when we got her into the house she was crying because she said they had taken all of her teeth. We figured it was just the drugs talking.

But we looked at her bill and realized they had taken out TEN teeth instead of four. They took out five of her bottom back teeth on BOTH sides.

Right now she is pretty drugged up and I don't think she realized. I am terrified about when she finds out. She was already pretty depressed about having to get partial dentures (I made a post earlier this week) and now this happened.

Sometimes it is inevitable. If the teeth must be removed, the sooner the better.

That should never, EVER happen without discussing it with the patient first. "Inevitable" or no, unless she was going to die right there...no.

can you please repost this as a collapsing comment (ie, blank comment, then reply) because of the potentially triggery content?

also: WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!

There is a TW you whiner.

Yes, and they politely asked if it could be reposted in a manner that collapses so they could avoid it altogether. It's not a requirement, but it is a suggestion in the main GC thread: (If the thread contains triggery content please post as 2nd comment so it collapses!)

tw, really?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was better safe than sorry. As you can see above, someone is already complainging.

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah that surprised me but I think they are trolling you. I don't think dentists and teeth are a trigger. If you just had your subject as "Dentist/teeth stuff" then anyone who didn't like it could see that and scroll. It's not really on the same scale as death or rape or self harm?

That said I'm sorry about your sister's tooth issues.

As someone with a trauma-related medical phobia who REALLY wishes she hadn't read that:
I appreciate the attempt and to hell with the people complaining that you warned, but the way you phrased it was vague/misleading(?) enough that it didn't actually help.

Holy hell, I can't imagine discovering something like that after the fact. I feel terrible for your poor sister, the shock is going to be something else....

:( Hopefully she pulls through okay, doesn't go through too much pain (considering, anyway), and gets her teeth fixed soonish. Maybe when she gets them fixed she'll adjust or even like her new teeth?

It's still an awful situation though, what the hell...

(Maybe file a complaint? I don't know the process, but...)

Yeesh. That dentist really should have talked to her before doing that.

Holy shit that's horrible I am so sorry for your sister.

Was it a mistake or was it a miscommunication or what? I mean emotionally this is just really really awful, but I hope it wasn't some really fucked up 'mistake' on the dentists and they actually had a reason for this.

Re: TW: Teeth/Dentist I guess?

My mom called and asked. The dentist said he needed to do it for the partial dentures (valplast). I know nothing about dentistry so I don't know if it is true.

Regardless, it would have been nice to be informed about that.

Jesus that's fucked up. They definitely should have informed the patient and family beforehand.

Yeah, that's kind of the opposite of informed consent.

Do you have anything in writing about what the dentist said to your sister?

If so i'd straight up refuse to pay.

How bad were her teeth and how old is she (could she have misunderstood her situation)? If the dentist noticed that all of those teeth were rotting, it was for the best to remove them at the same time before an infection set in.

She is 30 but as far as she knew they were healthy. He never mentioned them being bad. He told my mother he had to remove them for the partial denture she is going to get.

This isn't the first time I've heard something like this. Some dentists are hot to do unnecessary work on a patient's mouth, especially if they're unconscious or loopy from drugs, so they can charge more for it. And he took out most of her adult molars on the bottom? From what little I know of dentistry from my mom getting her entire mouth fucked up by a lunatic with a license, taking out that many teeth shouldn't have been necessary for a partial denture; even with bridges, they only shave healthy teeth, extraction is a last resort for molars because it fucks with the shape of the jaw and face. Just yanking shit out without express permission sounds like something a hack would do. If any of those teeth were anything short of rotten, you might want to take legal action against this asshole. I hope your sister takes the news better than I would, Jesus.

Jesus Christ. This reminds me of when I had to go to the dentist to get stubborn baby teeth pulled. I thought they were going to take two from my upper jaw, but they Novocaine-d me up and yanked out six teeth from my bottom jaw. D: Those were all baby teeth, at least. I can't imagine how badly I'd freak out if I were sedated for the whole procedure and woke up to six more missing teeth than expected. My first instinct is to sue the bastard.
