People can only gorge themselves on it so much, and then it gets to a point where people are like "Oh, this again. Yawn." Especially since you've got people like Lorde quickly gaining attention in the world of music, and she's like a polar opposite of the likes of Gaga and Miley in both style and public persona.

But yeah, style over substance rarely ever gets one far in the entertainment world. There are some who can pull it off, but that's only because they've learned to put more emphasis on the substance and use just the right amount of style.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)It's a shame really, but that's what happens if you build your whole image on beig super new and different and avant-garde, it's easy to run out of.
I really liked the Fame Monster, and Born This Way had a couple of good songs and great aesthetics (I like to pretend the title track didn't happen), but yeah that's all over unfortunately.
I do kind of hope she'll still come up with something in the future though and retire gracefully. Oh well.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 09:03 am (UTC)(link)Bowie's fourth album was Hunky Dory, which has both "Changes" and "Life on Mars?", plus gems like "Queen Bitch", "Oh! You Pretty Things" and "The Bewlay Brothers". His fifth would be The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.
From Gaga, we got... Artpop. If the jazz album with Tony Bennett becomes her Ziggy Stardust, I'll eat my keyboard.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)Like every fucking artist since the dawn of time who has ever been relevant has gone back to being "irrelevant" in the eyes of the general fickle public at some point in their careers.
If she's a true artist, she'll keep making music whether she's "relevant" or not, and the real fans will keep buying tickets and albums.
I know I come off as insensitive, and if you really love an artist, it can suck to see them go from what seems like an awesome place to something significantly less-than-awesome. But that happens to everyone to some degree at some point. IMO it's a lot sadder when it becomes painfully obvious that the musician is struggling like hell to stay relevant. But if being relevant is all that matters, one can achieve that by dying young and at their creative peak.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 04:49 am (UTC)(link)I don't think artists need to quit music altogether. Some artists just decide they don't have to go after big hits anymore and just do their own thing. Which is usually great for the musician and the the fans.
