This secret is like a year too late...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
MTE. I liked Fame Monster, and I can kinda see some good points about Born This Way, though I disliked most of it. But lately her music has got just garbled and messy.

Pretty much, yeah.

People get sick of outrageousness faster than they do of talent.

Yep. Lady Gaga is p. much old news (at least, where I live anyways. I hardly hear her songs on the radio as often as I used to), and I forsee the same thing happening to the likes of Miley Cyrus in a year or two, since their outrageousness has been oversold/overexposed at this point, imho.

People can only gorge themselves on it so much, and then it gets to a point where people are like "Oh, this again. Yawn." Especially since you've got people like Lorde quickly gaining attention in the world of music, and she's like a polar opposite of the likes of Gaga and Miley in both style and public persona.

Exactly! And the thing a lot of people forget is being a successful singer isn't primarily focused on how crazy/outrageous you are, but how good your talent is when it comes to being a singer. That's the thing that will keep you in the game forever, not how weird you fucking are! Which is why artists shouldn't use those "acts" as a way to be successful artist. They'll lose the game eventually.

Ah'yup. imho, Gaga lasted as long as she did in the public eye because there really wasn't anyone like her at the time (though it's been said she's copied/ripped off people like Grace Jones, late 80's/early 90's Madonna), and hasn't been for the last 4-5 odd years. I do think she has a good amount of talent ('The Fame Monster' was her musical peak, imho), but IMHO she's going to have to completely reinvent her image and maybe even her musical style -ala Madonna- at this point if she has any hope/desire of staying relevant in the public's eye.

But yeah, style over substance rarely ever gets one far in the entertainment world. There are some who can pull it off, but that's only because they've learned to put more emphasis on the substance and use just the right amount of style.

too late

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
not to be an asshole, but yeah, basically it's already happened. Musically she hasn't done anything new, her recent stuff sounds like it could be off of Born this Way, there's nothing new performance-wise or fashion-wise, and nobody talks about her any more.
It's a shame really, but that's what happens if you build your whole image on beig super new and different and avant-garde, it's easy to run out of.
I really liked the Fame Monster, and Born This Way had a couple of good songs and great aesthetics (I like to pretend the title track didn't happen), but yeah that's all over unfortunately.
I do kind of hope she'll still come up with something in the future though and retire gracefully. Oh well.

She's been irrelevant for years.

I've heard people say that she should go in a completely different direction and release an acoustic album or something of the sort, seeing as she can play the piano. Whether this would boost her career or not is up for debate. I don't know how she would make such a radical image shift but it'd be interesting if she could pull it off, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
so it's basically "can she pull off a David bowie?", the answer being no.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 09:03 am (UTC)(link)
+1

Bowie's fourth album was Hunky Dory, which has both "Changes" and "Life on Mars?", plus gems like "Queen Bitch", "Oh! You Pretty Things" and "The Bewlay Brothers". His fifth would be The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

From Gaga, we got... Artpop. If the jazz album with Tony Bennett becomes her Ziggy Stardust, I'll eat my keyboard.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it may be a bit late for that. She kind of took the wrong inspiration from her idols (Queen, David Bowie) and copied their showmanship and fashion, but forgot that they had the musical talent in both composition and performance to back it up. Substance AND style. If all you've got is style, that won't last.

I think she does have substance, she just doesn't really know how to use it, and ends up depending too much on her style. Her style has been getting more and more ridiculous, and though I loved (and still love) her older songs, her new stuff is just ... meh.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 03:16 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not a hardcore Gaga fan, but she does have substance? I think, anyway. She actually can play instruments, and she's got a great voice. If only she could write songs with actual substance and meaning, instead of just profound meanings she claims her bubblegum songs have. :P

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I agree completely.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this has already pretty much happened. I loved The Fame Monster, I wasn't crazy about Born This Way, and there's only a couple of songs I like on Artpop. The quality of Gaga's music has been on a steady decline, and unless something changes soon, she'll likely just fade away.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao about "fading into irrelevancy"

Like every fucking artist since the dawn of time who has ever been relevant has gone back to being "irrelevant" in the eyes of the general fickle public at some point in their careers.

If she's a true artist, she'll keep making music whether she's "relevant" or not, and the real fans will keep buying tickets and albums.

I know I come off as insensitive, and if you really love an artist, it can suck to see them go from what seems like an awesome place to something significantly less-than-awesome. But that happens to everyone to some degree at some point. IMO it's a lot sadder when it becomes painfully obvious that the musician is struggling like hell to stay relevant. But if being relevant is all that matters, one can achieve that by dying young and at their creative peak.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
She looks really beautiful in that pic.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I just want her to do some acoustic stuff. I actually love her singing.

I don't think artists need to quit music altogether. Some artists just decide they don't have to go after big hits anymore and just do their own thing. Which is usually great for the musician and the the fans.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 10:52 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly, I've never found anything she's done "outrageous". More like she just dresses like a lunatic and people are lunatics all the time.
What's new?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-03 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Man, I wished Madonna had retired when she was still relevant... it's been more than a decade and I'm not sure why she's still around.
