What the hell are you talking about? The only movies that he has been in that pander to American audiences (I assume this means action blockbuster, popcorn flicks) are his MCU films and War Horse. He has done some cameos in other movies/shows but I would think that 90% of the population would not recognize him.

Deep Blue Sea and Only Lovers Left Alive are definitely more artsy films that showcase his talents. And he has been doing plenty of theater work in between filming breaks.

Isn't he doing Coriolanus right now? Yeah, I don't think he's pandering. He's getting that exposure so he has access to the scripts he really wants. Although, I actually think he has a great career - big budget blockbusters & smaller, more personal flicks. Pretty win/win/win.

I had to look up Deep Blue Sea to double check that you weren't referring the movie with the intelligent sharks, because that was the first thing that came to mind but I was like "noooooo, i'd know if he'd been in that."

Sorry OP I don't really agree. His next couple of projects are what Crimson Peak and High Rise? The former is a horror film but not a standard one given the director and the latter seems to be a dystopian commentary of sorts and reading the summary of the book doesn't strike me as pandering to a mainstream audience.

If anything I think he's being overly cautious in his choices to avoid being only cast in Loki style roles. I think he's also said he would go back to the theatre again and again if he has the time. And I hope he does because I didn't get chance to see Coriolanus in the flesh (I did see the NTL broadcast.)

This isn't me unwilling to hear any criticism of him because I think he is in danger sometimes of feeding into the Loki association - but only because he's really enthusiastic for that part. I just don't see how his choices are pandering to a specific audience? I'm British and I don't feel he's neglecting my tastes (I love dystopian fiction so am looking forward to High Rise.)

And URGH why must everything be Hiddles Vs Cumberbatch? I really don't get this!

Don't compare Hiddleston to Cumberbatch. Hiddleston actually knows how to act.

Admittedly, the only Shakespeare I've seen him in was Henry V, but it didn't make me want to see any more. There's a lot of different ways to play that part well, but he didn't seem to pick any of them.

I have never, in my life, seen a worse St. Crispin's Day speech. It was actively embarrassing to watch. Some of that was the director apparently not understanding how that scene actually works, but Hiddles did not exactly save it. Or visibly try to.

I'm not trying to troll or stir up shit here; I know that the Hollow Cheekbones production got a lot of fangirls excited, and parts of it were lovely. But that Henry V was squirming-in-my-seat awkward to watch, it was so bonelessly bad.

I imagine he'll have plenty of time to do more artsy stuff when his current popularity dries up. Think of Loki and other such light roles as financial investments. Also as an investment in fun, as he seems to be having a blast with it.

What the hell is this secret? One of the last things he's done is Shakespeare's Coriolanus, and Only Lovers Left Alive has been released just now, just to say two.

I think you have them mixed up, because of the two I think the one that has been in more wide-audience movies (and Sherlock too, btw) is BC.

Also, the PS is ridiculous. She's dragging her feet because BC isn't her type... maybe she doesn't want to watch Sherlock? It's not like it's this perfect show, let her choose.

A nice fat Marvel paycheck gives you the freedom to pursue more "artistic" endeavors, OP. Hiddleston's done plenty of non-blockbuster roles. Most of his resume consists of non-blockbusters, so I'm not even sure where you're getting this idea of him pandering to the masses.

Eh, why wouldn't he? He genuinely seems to enjoy playing Loki and commercial success for actors usually means they have more freedom in roles/get a bigger script pile to wade through. From what I understand, when you're not a very widely-known actor, parts are harder to come by.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-01 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Doing the odd blockbuster/mainstream movie 1) helps pay the bills (starving in a garret for your art is no fun if you're the one starving), 2) brings you wider exposure and popularity, which in turn gets you more opportunities to play whatever roles interest you, and 3) is not actually necessarily a problem because a movie is not automatically low brow just because it was popular and made money (or was a scifi/fantasy/comic book movie). It doesn't have to be an either/or thing and I have a lot of respect for actors who find a balance between "this was artistically fulfilling" and "this bought me my house" and who have built up lengthy resumes even when not everything on there is the deepest, most artistic thing eve.

How is he perpetuating the Loki image in anything he's done recently? His last two roles were Coriolanus and then Only Lovers Left Alive. Then he has the Muppet thing and the next role is High Rise. Neither of which are anything like the other and most of which aren't big budget.. If anything I think he's *too* picky, although I admire it.

I haven't seen him in anything but honestly, of course everyone wants money.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Because OF COURSE they both have their pick of scripts!! Anything those two want to do, it's automatically greenlighted!! They're the belles of the casting directors' ball!

Loki is a character he just loves to play though. And it's not like there have been thirty movies with him cast as that type.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-02 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no a comic book character! How déclassé of him! I'm so glad you have TH's best interests at heart unlike those seething masses of common fans.

I thought he was still mostly doing that stuff?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2014-03-02 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know him very well, but once I take out the Loki, his acting career does seem to lean towards medieval/Shakespearean stuff, art films, etc. Playing Loki in the MCU films seems to be the only movie he's doing that "pandering to American audiences", though quite frankly MCU is pretty popular all around the world.

He gets the most of his exposure from that one film/franchise, sure, but that's hardly the bulk of what he's doing. And now being so well-known and popular means he can do even more of the classic/traditional stuff.

Am I missing something here?

Watch Coriolan, I think it's still on in London and it's good. He's British, so in addition to TV he plays in theater, classics and all.

Didn't read others' replies, someone probably already mentioned it...

the only way this secret makes any sense to me is to swap the two actors. o___o

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2014-03-02 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
30 years from now, Hiddleston and Cumberbatch will be co-staring together in a revival of a two-man play and will be trolling the Supernet via holographs of their pub crawls and shopping trips.
