This is exactly how I feel about Space Dandy. The setting and characters are, in theory, things I should love, but when I've ended up watching the show, I just don't care about them at all.

Maybe it's the episodic format?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I like what I've seen of it, but it does have that negative continuity - randomly ending episodes. It could be that the very male-oriented fanservice turns off some, too? I mean, Boobies is funny, but only to a point.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
The male-oriented fanservice does kind of leave me rolling my eyes (as is the case for any anime with blatant fanservice.) That's why I was glad to see Dandy getting used for some female-oriented fanservice in later episodes.

Looks like double standard to me, and that's not nice.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's because they are trying too hard to please western audience. Forced pandering.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Like the current shows aren't pandering to dirty otaku.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, both are pandering, but not the same kind of pandering. So it makes senese that some who is familiar with otaku pandering doesn't feel comfortable with western pandering.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
And the vast majority of people (on either side of the Pacific) sick of otaku pandering... should get nothing?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
What the hell are you going on? Where did I imply that? For gods sake reread my comments, I'm just trying to give an explanation to why OP dislike the show. If you want my opinion, both otaku pandering and the pandering in Space Dandy are cancer (oh look boobs!!! hehehe boobs boobs more boobs again).

Spoilers ahead?

Could be that they all die in the very the first episode and nothing ever matters or ties into anything. I haven't watched a whole lot of anime, but of the anime I have watched, this one is very different because it doesn't have long, ongoing arcs that tell a story. Instead it's just a bunch of unrelated mini-stories being told like bedtime stories.

An interesting theory I've heard is that, when Dandy pulled on the time thread, it created many different dimensions and each episode is set in a separate dimension.

Even though I find the show really weird with its tonal whiplash, I can't help but want to see what happens in the next episode.

I kind of thought that, too, to be honest. Though, admittedly, part of that had to do with over-thinking the translation to the closing theme.

Whatever the case, I just hope that they tell us what the hell is going on! I'm enjoying the show, but I can't help but feel as if they're stringing me along at this point.

For me, it's the pre-hype that got built up around it. Some folks I knew were declaring/insinuating that this was to/could be 'the next big thing', but much like how I was for certain things (that shall remain nameless to avoid potential wank), I was left kinda cold. I can't describe how exactly, it was just a feeling of '... And?' Which is a shame, because I liked Cowboy Bebop, but comparing that and 'Space Dandy' is apples, oranges, et all.

I'm willing to give it a second shot, though. But not for a while yet.

...Because it's just Cowboy Bebop all over again, but with more boobs/needless fanservice and less plot?

(Yeah, I know I'm probably going to get attacked for that. But frankly, I don't care, because I think it's a really stupid show, and all the rabid Toonami fanatics are all declaring it THE BEST SHOW EVAR really doesn't help either.)

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2014-03-04 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
But it's nothing like Bebop. Bebop was mainly a drama/action and Space Dandy is comedy/action, the only thing they have in common are they take place in space and Spike and Dandy are both bounty hunters.

I am having trouble watching it though because some of the episodes come off as bland and sometimes boring and the episodes that aren't just have certain parts that are worth watching. I never had this problem with Bebop, even when it was repeated ad nauseam on AS.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Bebop was drama/action...with elements of humor thrown on in there, without it feeling forced. Its episodes are rarely alike to one another; each one kind of takes off on its own genre, from horror to reefer madness.

Space Dandy, unfortunately...it's trying too hard.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
It does feel super scattered, but I enjoy all the pieces. I liked the silly zombie episode as much as the quasi-serious one about him helping the little girl with tentacles, and the one with the lonely dog and the weird fleas was both tragic and idiotic. It reminds me a lot of TOS Star Trek in how it hops from pathos to camp and gives no shits.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-04 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm one of the few people here enjoying the the fuck out out of it. Tbh I was a bit disappointed watching the first few episodes since my expectations were so high. But since it picked up at the zombie episode, I've enjoyed it immensely. Once I got over the fact that it is justca silly, fun space anime and won't be another Bebop I've grown fond of it.
