Re: Sleep disorders

Various over the counter sleep aids. I don't want to try any of the prescribed stuff because my sister and mom have both reacted badly to ambien. I have tried meditating before sleep, listening to nothing (never again), listening to music (meh), and listening to white noise (which I always do now). I work out and such so I don't think that is a problem.

Hmm...this does seem hard to communicate, lol. I guess we don't see dates as trying out what a person would be like as a partner. It's just like doing something with a new friend, except there's an assumption that you're attracted to each other. Most of what we do on dates, especially first dates, is exactly the same stuff we do with individual friends.

I've never heard of flossing until I 'heard' Americans talking about it on the internet. It's not really a thing here as far as I know. We just brush our teeth.

We have one cabinet that ALWAYS opens by itself. It is the most annoying thing ever.

And I hate when something live (football or something) screws with the DVR timing.

That is my mom. She will leave lights on during the day so I have to turn them off. She also throws away too much food for stupid reasons. :|

Interesting! Yeah "flossing regularly" is always a thing over here. A lot of people do and a lot of people don't but pretty much everyone agrees they should.

That's neat. What's your favorite Shakespeare play? I can never decide between Julius Ceaser, or the Tempest.

Re: Sleep disorders

[personal profile] meredith44 2014-03-05 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
I've never been officially diagnosed with anything (I've been given sleeping pills and such, but I don't like them), but I've always had horrid sleeping patterns since I was a kid. Even when I was like 6 or 7, I'd stay awake reading until like midnight or later and then wake up for school. (So getting 6 hours instead of the 10 that kids are supposed to get.) And then when I'd done this for awhile, I'd just crash. The worst was one night in high school when I came back from an event and then slept for the next 36 hours (only getting up to pee and then going back to bed, never fully awake). I still do this now, as a 38-year-old, generally getting from 2-5 hours of sleep most nights and occasionally (like once a year or so?) crashing hard. I guess I don't mind too much, as it gives me more hours to play on the internet and read and things like that, but I do feel out of it at other times, and I don't like that feeling.

That happens here but with salt everywhere. :(

And my stupid cats don't eat fast BUT they knock their food out of their bowls. It is so annoying.

Although it's often uncomfortable to write too close to one's own fantasies, or deep emotions, or other personal stuff, the end result is generally worth it. Nobody will pick up on the stuff that's absolutely specifically you unless you repeat a specific thing in multiple fics. I was just rereading a group of fics I wrote between 8 and 5 years ago, and I picked up on something from my personal life that snuck into a dozen of them -- and not a single person caught it back then, even my betas. As a rule, people are usually too caught up in their own crap to hyperanalyze anyone else's. (Fictional characters and famous people aside, obviously.)

Re: I had a thought:

(Anonymous) 2014-03-05 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the thing is, I know how you do it, but it is hard to explain how we do it. Like, we're already out at a party or bar or park or wherever. We're already doing something. And then you meet someone or start talking to someone you already knew with flirty intentions and continue doing that activity with them. Kissing might or might not ensue. sometimes you flirt with a person several times at separate occasions before it happens. You might go to a bar expecting to meet them again there or even say 'hey, I'm gonna be at X next Saturday' but you don't actually make a date and go together.

If you move somewhere new you would go to work or school and get to know people through that then you might do something with them. There is also various social groups you can join, like volunteer work, sports or just random things like knitting clubs. Failing that just go to a pub and you will always meet someone there, and get to know them. Alcohol is the thing we need to be friendly, other countries have their things, we have this.

I didn't say it was inappropriate to ask someone to do something with you, I said we don't in general date. I go to a movie and dinner with friends all the time, even people I don't know that well, but meet through school or at work. But the object of that would be to get to know someone not to get romantically involved with that person.

I also realise that I forgot to add a part to that sentence when I halfway rewrote it, that part belongs with the going to someones house before going out to a pub thing.

I agree completely. I would understand why people would consider this shaming if it were just the way he looked normally, but... he literally gained the weight on purpose for a role, and that's what she was referencing.
