Would it be so terrible if Rae ended up with someone society also finds unattractive?

Or do us ugly people deserve the "cute" people because we're still using that as a gauge of how much someone is worth? Are we just replaying all those fat guy/hot wife sitcoms with the genders reversed?

I think it's nice to show that it's not all about sorting people based on looks/conventional attraction. A lot of people have this conception that hot people will always be paired with hot people and ugly people with ugly people. Same with fat/fat and thin/thin.

Oh, I know. And from the little I've seen these two are adorable. It's just that this "I'm so happy she ended up with this cute guy" thing can stray into thinking getting the cute guy is her reward for being a good person.

Oh, yeah, true that. That's not how I read the secret but that particular attitude definitely is dumb.

Yup.

Come on, go through any fandom comm and count the number of times you see someone who has previously passionately criticized Nice Guy-ism only to turn around and say that Girl/Guy X can "do so much better" than Girl/Guy Y, because falling in love with a specific individual isn't a thing, only grabbing for whoever is as far up some subjectively-codified social ladder as you can reach is.

(The biggest reason this phrase makes me batshit is its reverse implication -- if you have major character flaws, you should settle for someone who treats you like shit.)

Yes to all of this. I hate this type of attitude, it's disturbing, especially your last point:

"(The biggest reason this phrase makes me batshit is its reverse implication -- if you have major character flaws, you should settle for someone who treats you like shit.)"

This is closely related to the idea that being in a volatile, dysfunctional, or otherwise unhealthy relationship is better than being single.

"X is the best that Y will ever be able to get, so he/she should just suck it up, because ANYTHING is better than being single." Um, no, no, and no.

"X is a flawed person who has made mistakes or has some less-than-stellar personal attributes, therefore he/she should be grovelingly grateful that ANYONE would deign to be with them." Ugh.

Thanks anon :)

OP, there is absolutely no point giving up on finding happiness in a relationship before you even try. You have no idea how you would actually feel once you find someone you like and who likes you (no matter what they look like) - and you also have no idea how other people are going to react to you either. You say you don't care, but it sounds like you actually do, quite a bit, if the thought of some hypothetical negativity is enough to put you off the entire prospect of dating.

Work on loving yourself OP, and things will seem much less grim. I'm rooting for you!

People are more than their looks (in all ways; even if you find someone gorgeous it doesn't mean you'll click with them or that they'll be right for you) and looks are subjective in the first place, so you shouldn't think no one will ever be interested in you because of your weight or that you'll never date a 'hot' guy. But, again, looks aren't everything. (Not saying they aren't nice, just not everything.)

But yes, I can see where you're coming from, I think. There are plenty of not conventionally attractive men in media that date conventionally attractive women, and not so much of the reverse.

(He is super hot though, ngl. What I can see of him, anyway.)

I don't dislike Rae's looks because she's heavy, but because the girl is just so ugly. I cannot find anything about her face attractive. It confuses me that others do.

Same. Her eyes freak me out. Good actress, though.
