Re: What non-canon slash pairings do you think are almost-canon?

Well, the whole "Quatre wears pink = therefore gay!" thing was stupid, I agree. Especially since pink wasn't even seen as a girly color until relatively recently in Japan. But deep friendship... at least. All the other Gundam boys had female love interests, in fact, all the main characters do except for them. Trowa and Quatre have each other, even though they have female "counterparts", and have at least an emotionally intimate relationship. They aren't "canon" but I also can't even comprehend that the writers didn't consider them a pairing, if only for fujoshi bait.

A side note, I recently heard that in the Spanish dub, Quatre actually says "te amo" to Trowa. I don't know if that's true, though.

It wasn't just the whole pink thing either. There was the whole Quatre and him being so sensitive that he must be gay thing. How he totally looked gay. Everybody also always points to the scene where they they play music together as meaning they're totally gay and the implications from that reasoning just bug me.

I suppose I can see where they're coming from, but to me, I just read them as having a very close friendship. I guess my slash goggles are broken or something. As for the writers pandering, I'm not sure. They could have.

Well, I'd agree about the sensitive point, and the Quatre "looks gay" point. But I don't think the music scene is an unfair evidence at all. Not "music is gay" but it's a blatant relationship building scene, and Quatre harmonizing with a guy that's been almost totally silent. I think the scene is very important, whether or not you believe their is sexual tension. Iirc, Quatre and Trowa even live together in Frozen Teardrop. They aren't "canon" in the sense that they haven't kissed on screen or anything but I think they are one of the better candidates for this topic.

The writers were definitely aware of their female fanbase. Gundam Wing had a ton of official art that was very... close between pretty much all the pilots. I used to have a folder with all the art, unfortunately not now. But whether or not the writers intend for Quatre and Trowa to actually be gay, there's no way they were unaware of their fanbase.

I will admit that it is there to build their relationship but I didn't get anything like sexual tension or the like from it. Considering that they had only recently met, it comes off to me as two allies bonding and becoming friends. Like I said, I guess my shipper goggles aren't on toght enough. That and most of the reasons I've heard just seem stereotypical or read like a deep friendship to me. Anyway, I apologize if I'm coming off as rude or anything. I've got no problem with the ship, it just never really clicked for me.

Oh god, I will concede that Frozen Teardrop is definitely pandering to the fujoshi fanbase. I like to pretend it doesn't exist tbh. As nd yeah, they were definitely aware of their fambase, but during theoriginsl show's run it was mostly limited to magazine spreads.

It was the LatinoAmerican dub, actually, and he only mentioned he loved Trowa, but never said that to him.
The 15 yeas old me was very disappointed to discover that was a dub only thing.

That is awesome that he actually said that! Can I ask, then, in the context of the Latin dub, did it seem romantic at all? Blatantly platonic? Ambiguous?

English Quatre was pretty gay for Trowa, too, though I can't remember all of his quotes off hand.

It's been years since I saw it, but if I remember correctly it was during the attack to the colony where an amnesic Trowa was and Quatre's mention of his love for Trowa even implied he was willing to fight for his sake.

But the main thing was the wording.

"Amar" implies a very strong love and is mostly used for romantic love.

"Querer" (which can mean to love or to like depending on the context) has a more broad use, which can go from romantic love (but implies the feeling is not as strong as "amar") to platonic love.

And if I remember correctly, in that very same episode Catherine said she loved Trowa, but used "quiero", implying with that that she loved him as her brother.

And then, minutes later, Quatre was fighting and mentioning "realmento amo a Trowa" ("I really love Trowa")...

It can be interpreted as a very strong non-romantic love, but I don't know anyone who saw that scene and didn't assume it was romantic.

Thanks, that's interesting to know! English of course doesn't really have different words for friendship love or romantic love, even the words like or "care about" can mean a lot depending on context.

Anyway, even if it's only a translation thing, I love it!
