Are you me? Because yeah, I do the exact same thing, to the exact same effect.

God, I know what you mean. Sometimes I look at characters making fools of themselves/being very emotional and I just cringe so hard I think about pausing the thing and doing something else for a while.

But I learnt to convince myself not to do it. I mentally order myself to stop perceiving the events as real and keep in mind the fact that it is no more than a TV show. And then I can go through these scenes without pausing. I kind of subdue my emotional connection to what is going on on-screen.

I know the feeling, thank goodness I managed to train myself to hit the mute button instead. Makes it so much easier. I would cheerfully kill to end this current trend towards cringe-comedy though. Specifically, the person to kill would be Ricky Gervaise which would pretty much end the trend on its own.

Mute buttoner here as well: I also love that "jump 6 seconds ahead" button on the cable remote.

Thirding this. The mute button is a great friend.

Same here...mute and fast forward.

Unfortunately, avoiding Gervaise don't work... I DO - I don't remember the last time I watched something he appeared in or wrote, and it certainly wouldn't have been willingly - and I'm still muting a disproportionate number of shows.

I'm not sure whether you mean you can't watch the show because the awkward scenes embarrass you, or because you're pausing when someone is making a stupid face so you can screencap it.

Tumblr ruins everything.

I wondered that as well, but everyone seems to be going with the former so I'm going to assume that's what OP meant. Not that I don't get secondhand embarrassment on occasions, but rarely does it bother me enough to stop a show. Guess I'm lucky.

Second-hand embarrassment, not screen-capping.

Meh, just do what I do and hit the mute button.

Oh gosh I do this sometimes too, like I have to brace myself for the horribly awkward moment that's going to happen. Recently I've dealt with this by switching to another tab so I just hear the dialogue and go back when the scene or moment is over.

Are there a lot of awkward scenes in your shows?

They're all over the goddamned place.

It took me 3 hours to watch the first episode of Breaking Bad because I was using the 'pause' strategy, instead of the 'mute' strategy at the time. The awkward birthday handjob scene alone took 20 minutes (It was actually halfway through that scene that I just started muting.) And stuff that's actually meant as 100% comedy is even worse.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
There's apparently a lot of us. We should never watch TV together, or we'll never finish.
elephantinegrace: (Default)

Fastforwarding, I choose you!

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-03-15 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I had to stop watching The Office. I got into it because of the "Parkour!" clip that was going around tumblr that had me in stitches, but then I realized I was skipping over more than half the episode because of second-hand cringe, and I decided it wasn't worth my time.

There are a lot of other shows that don't have cringeworthy moments (or at least not my version of cringeworthy), OP, so just watching something else.

I can't watch awkward scenes either. (I've got such a blush squick.) But I don't want to pause it, because that would prolong it. Instead I use the fast forward. (And avoid a lot of comedies, as apparently that is a popular thing in comedy.) Good luck, OP!

I think I'm the opposite. I sometimes pause during exciting scenes because the anticipation gets to me or because I'm sure I missed something good. Does anybody else do that?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-15 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! I had to do this with the reunion scene in the latest series of Sherlock; it took me about half an hour to get through a 3 minute scene!

Oh man, I so do this ALL THE TIME. I pause it and do something else until I decide I can handle it... typically this lasts about three seconds and I pause it again. Rinse, lather, repeat. *sigh*

I do the same thing when I realize an embarrassment-squicky scene is coming up. I'll pause and take a little break, browse the internet for a bit or something, and then come back and be ready to get through it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-16 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Uhg, yes. When a character is going to do something embarrassing I can't watch, I have to pause it and scream, and when I unpause it I`m basically watching through my fingers. ahhhh
darkmanifest: (Default)

[personal profile] darkmanifest 2014-03-16 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
I avoid that by skipping ahead instead of pausing. I can spare a few minutes of plot - and usually the reason I'm cringing is because I know exactly what's about to happen next, so it's not like I miss anything - to avoid embarrassing scenes.
