Opinions on people adding fic/art on artwork?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
On my dash right now, a artist is complaining. Apparently she posted Sherlock comic art piece that ended in angst. Someone who reblogged it and added their own little bit of art and a comment about "Sorry about ruining the angst."

The original artist is mad because she says it twists the original meaning of her art. Mind you, the reblogger is not impersonating or saying their addition is better or "canon".

What are your thoughts? Do you think the artist has a right to complain, call out, and tell people to not post things like that on their art?

Or do you think the whole "death to the author" and "it is just fanfiction (of fanfiction" and the artist is overreacting?

Huh. On my dash it's pretty common for people to add stuff to each others' fic/art. Was it like a cutesy little addition?

Yeah basically. Just like a 3 panel rough draft comic piece.

The artist has the right to complain, but no moral high ground from which to do so.

This. I can understand if they find it annoying, but it's fanart on Tumblr.

I can see why they might be a bit upset if it changed the meaning of their comic, but honestly, I'd be flattered if that happened to me. Isn't it nice when somebody likes your work enough to want to attempt to complement it?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That is what I would think? It isn't like the reblogger was saying hers was better. She just liked the art and added her own.

Artist is being whiny. She's got a right to complain but no entitlement to other people caring.

So... Your friend is a fan-artist complaining about people creating fan-art, and...they don't see anything a bit hypocritical about that?

Here is the artwork and the addition (had to go thru notes to find it)

well, it's kinda cheap drama in the first place and the added "fanart" actually made me understand the original, so...

Re: Opinions on people adding fic/art on artwork?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Normally I think they should brush it off, but it sounds like a fix it add-on, if it apparently "ruined the angst".

Yeah, depending on the case, that would really fucking cheapen the power of the original piece. Especially if the post added fanwork gets shared more often.

It's Tumblr. People do that there. If your friend doesn't like it that this might happen and that it's completely beyond her control, she'd be better off posting her stuff someplace like DeviantArt and maybe linking to it from a Tumblr post.

First off, it's "death of the author" and second... this is not how it's supposed to be used at all.

I went on a rant on this a while back, though your not using it in the way that actually makes me rage.

But death of the author is about review, critique, and interpretation. To re-use the example I gave before...

Person A: "You know, this work really speaks to me as a metaphor for the trans-communities struggles *gives citations*"

Person B: "I really don't think the author intended it that way at all."

Person A: *Shrug* "That really doesn't matter. You can still find this in the work"

Now to answer your actual question this is something entirely different. It's fanart. On a much smaller level then the big fandoms we normally associate with that, but it's fanart. Fan art twists the original canon all the goddamn time!

Bikini Power Bottom

That shit's flattery in my view. But even if the author doesn't like it, as long as there's not money or shit being made off it, it's just one of the hazards of the business of creating something for public consumption.

I find it funny that they're getting upset about a derivative work of their fanart, when that's exactly what fanart is.

On one hand, it IS her so she does have a right to complain in that respect. On the other hand, it was fanart (so claiming copyright would violate the copyright of the source material) that was posted to the internet which essentially means people can do whatever the hell they want to with it. In short, she can be mad about it but she doesn't really have a right to complain.

I'm fine with it.

The artist can feel irritated, sure, but if they're raging at the second artist they're being a dick. Especially if the original is fanart - it's not even their character?

The original meaning of their fanart is unchanged, their art is not harmed in anyway, the other artist has just added to show their own take but original!artists artwork is unharmed. Welcome to free speech/creativity/parodies/reinterpretation and all that.

The original artist has every right to be frustrated and complain about their frustration. But they have no right to stop other artists from responding to their artwork if they post it publicly, and no room to complain if their original artwork was fanart to begin with.

New art doesn't change the original art. It has its own meaning that uses the original art as background, in the same way the original fanart was its own piece that used Sherlock for background. On any art or piece of work, people are going to project their own meanings and interpretations no matter what you do, and everyone will see it just a little bit differently. People will judge her comic on its own basis and background, and that won't change just because now there's another perspective put out there by another fanartist.

Artist should deal. It's Tumblr, that's what happens. Honestly, I'm tired of people acting like Tumblr is LJ -- that is, that if you post something it is in your 'personal journal' which is your personal space that you invite people into and how dare anyone violate it. Tumblr doesn't work that way. You tag it, it's now community game. Don't want people to mess with your shit, don't tag it, simple as that. Post it to Deviantart or something.

It's fanart to begin with, she can get the fuck over it. Now were it an original comic that was angsty and someone decided to add to it, she has a right be pissed off and annoyed, but being as it's fanart? Nope.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
I have mixed feelings about this. Let me tell you about one fanart I saw a while ago.

It was obvious the artist intended as a kinda angsty pic, who could also be interpreted as shippy by the fans of those two characters as a couple. A BNF added a little comment that was hilarious (and very IC for one of the characters) that completely destroyed the purpose of the original pic, because honestly, it was just too goddamn funny not to laugh.

I laughed so much with it, and everytime I see that pic I cannot help but laugh again, but at the same time, I feel bad for the author of the original drawing, because I don't think that's the kind of reaction he/she wanted to evoke. Also, I feel kind of silly angsting about it now, but at the same time, I'd like to...

Fanart in response to fanart?

Fuck, I thought everybody was upset that Tumblr had killed real fandom interaction. Original artist can complain, seeing as she does have a working keyboard, but that doesn't make the complaint any good.
