I really liked the concept and the worldbuilding, and a lot of the bits and pieces were fun, but I wasn't really excited by any of the characters, with the possible exception of Lobsang. They were just kind of meh.

It kind of felt like a universe in search of a plot. It brainstormed a bunch of potential plots, dabbled in a scattering of them, but never really committed to any of them. And the ending felt... gratuitous? Forced? Tacked on to show that this one plot we messed with a bit really was a big plot, see how important it is?

I've had the sequel for months and haven't read it yet (except the end).

Lobsang. As in... Lobsang Ludd, the main character from "Thief of Time"? ...I need to read this. Now.

No, no, that's what I thought too, and got all excited, but it is, in fact, a different Lobsang.

USians... I just can't stand that shit.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Same. It sounds so...idiotic.I have never heard anyone outside of the internet use that term.

Agreed. At first, I always think it's a typo, someone trying to type "us" (as in you and me, not u.s.) and going horribly awry. Even when I figure out what they're trying to say, it strikes me as exceptionally idiotic.

And I'm going to flash my non-American credentials here - Canadian, BTW, so no, I'm not personally offended by it, but I do think it's dumb.

I keep thinking somebody misspelled Usain Bolt.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Unreadable.

Gretchen, stop trying to make USian happen! It's not going to happen!

I like ship but I agree that no one has yet to get it's voice right
