I got a concrit once which normally would have been well received, but because of the timing, was extremely painful and very very hard for me to handle. If the poster had had the courtesy to check my personal journal (small fandom, she knew where it was) then she would have known this was really, really not the right moment to come on all righteously Hermione. :-/

There's a time and a place for unsolicited crit, but if you don't know the author at all, then ask yourself : why does this bother me and what would leaving crit for this complete stranger actually help?

On the one hand, I understand not wanting to get criticism at some times, and I wouldn't really advocate roaming AO3 with red pen at the ready.

On the other hand, expecting people to stalk your personal journal before reviewing your fic is... I don't know, I'd find it kind of creepy if people did that. They're reviewing my fic, not reviewing me.

So before someone leaves concrit, they need to thoroughly research/stalk the author? That's going to cut into a lot of fic-reading time.

There's nothing wrong with concrit, solicited or not. You acknowledge that it would have been well-received otherwise: why hold it against the commenter?

Then don't read comments to your fic until you're ready. No one is expected to follow up on your life story before they leave you a comment.

I think there's also a real difference between constructive criticism and criticism that may be valid but is delivered assholishly. The point of constructive criticism is supposed to be to help someone improve their writing; being a dick about whatever the problem is does not help.

for instance, I really appreciate when people point out typos and continuity errors and other stuff to me. I would not appreciate that if they were ugly to me while doing so. And I see a lot of "concrit" that really reads as an excuse to be douchey to newbie writers or people who make inadvertent mistakes.

I'm sorry you had a hard time handling some criticism, Anon. That sucks.
