I know how you feel, I do the same thing. But I know a number of fanfic authors, and often they don't want critique. They wrote the story for fun and had a great time doing it, and they've gone through their beta readers and the like. I had to learn to take a step back.

Or, if the author's notes say there was no beta reader, send a private message. That's always a better route since it doesn't have the potential to be publicly embarrassing.

If you give concrit on AO3 you get slapped down hard, no matter how polite you are.

It really depends on the fandom. The overwhelming majority of, say, Lewis and Rivers of London fans appreciate and listen to concrit.

This may be the prevailing attitude some places, but not everywhere. I, for one, have always appreciated concrit.

I have said something a couple of times. Luckily the authors have been nice about whatever I've pointed out. Most of the time, though, I don't bother to say anything and just move on.

You can always send a PM if you really want to say something.

It's doubly discouraging when you do write and literally no one notices a fic that you obviously put a lot of hard work into.

Maybe it's because I'm not a writer (God, I'm a shit writer), but when I come across a fic that has problems I either continue reading and do my best to ignore or forgive them, or just stop reading. I don't think it's worth getting upset over. If the author wants concrit go ahead, and even if they don't concrit isn't the worst thing, but it's up to you if you want to go through with it. Some people respond better to it than others.

Bad in what way? Characterization? Conventions? Flow? All of the above?

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-03-22 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Inorite? I always have this morbid urge to look at badfic, especially if there are comments. And I'm more likely to click on an obvious badfic that has few kudos but a lot of comments, because this often means that the comments contain (con)crit.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-22 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I got a concrit once which normally would have been well received, but because of the timing, was extremely painful and very very hard for me to handle. If the poster had had the courtesy to check my personal journal (small fandom, she knew where it was) then she would have known this was really, really not the right moment to come on all righteously Hermione. :-/

There's a time and a place for unsolicited crit, but if you don't know the author at all, then ask yourself : why does this bother me and what would leaving crit for this complete stranger actually help?

I don't write fic, but I know that lots of people who do only do so for fun and to enjoy seeing their fantasy played out on paper (or the screen, most likely). I think the praise it gets is from people who have similar fantasies about their characters and liked that someone else wrote it down. I'd say it's more about common ground and camaraderie than actually about "good writing."

So, I think it's good that you don't comment even if you want to. Most people would just get upset that someone was sticking their nose in where they didn't want to be anyway, telling them how to express their fantasies.

At least, that's what I've been told.

Kudos =/= Brilliance

[personal profile] omens 2014-03-22 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know why people get upset over badfic having high kudos counts. Big fandoms will have more kudos. People give kudos for MANY reasons: I finished this fic, I liked this fic, This fic hit me in the id-spot, This fic has a great concept, I like you, Oh man someone's writing in my tiny fandom, &c, &c, &c... Personally, when I'm bummed, I can't get enough of the melodramatic AUs and BOOP, leavin some kudos.

That being said, OP, do it! Write! :D

I understand where you are coming from, OP. My main fandom is full of so much badfic, sometimes I give concrit, most of the time the fanfiction is just so bad that I ignore it.

I'd say "go for it", writ the critique, maybe as an "anon" if the fic allows it.

Counter it by finding a really good fanfic with no comments/kudos and leave the author something nice.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
I've thought about making an account just to give feedback about annoying things:

"You really don't need 5000 tags"
"That's not how punctuation works"
"Adult human beings do not talk or act like that"
"This isn't ff.net, no one cares about your life. Stop with the long author notes"

etc.

I generally don't because I'm lazy, unless it's something that's just like a huge, glaring problem. [The worst I've ever seen was the whole "I'm going to write all the dialogue in this chapter in a different language and not give any translations - and it's going to include a massive plot point!"]

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
It's just a fanfiction. Unless the writer has expressed a desire to improve their skill, just leave them be and go find something else to read.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
I left concrit on a fic like that once. All their little groupies got their panties in a wad.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Do it, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
Ask yourself this: do you want to critique the fic (or see it critiqued) because you honestly believe that there's a good idea or story underneath the flaws that could be brought out with some help and extra work, or do you want to crit it because you're bitter that something you personally consider inferior is getting a lot of attention?

If it's the former, go ahead and crit, but be polite about it, and be mindful that your crit may not be well received (and even if it's well received by the author, their friends or fans might be defensive if they perceive you as attacking either the author or their own taste).

If it's the latter, that's something you need to get over. Bad is fairly subjective, and even when it isn't, it isn't always unenjoyable. Particularly in fandom, where people are more likely to be looking for an engaging fix of their favorite ships and/or tropes rather than a lovingly crafted literary masterpiece.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 10:30 am (UTC)(link)
Apparently though you seem to be the only person who thinks the fanfic in question is "bad". I find it "wonderful" when readers of fanfic are all like, "Everyone has to listen to my critique! Or else you're a bad writer!" Not everyone wants critique, and that's okay. You can always critique, even if the author didn't explicitly ask for it, but if you get shit for it, quite honestly - you deserve it.

me too

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
anon, me too. I'm always like gah, this writer hasn't heard the facts but I don't want to give it to them straight. Since it can be painful for a stranger to criticize (even mildly) someone's work I've stayed out of it for the better.
