They are there, but in my experience if you are looking for a massive neon arrow pointing to A Big Ol' Pile of Reasonable People All in One Place, most of the time you're going to be frustrated.

Entering into discussions one on one is really the only way to sift out the good ones.

lol, exactly. There's no one place to go to find folks like this, you just have to search. Trying talking to people who you think seem cool and reasonable and you might be pleasantly surprised. Or particularly disappointed, but you never know until you try.

You could try finding people who seem reasonable and try talking to them, but I don't know that fandom in general has ever been a place for great discussions.

I'm in between the two extremes so those people exist. They just might not be easy to find.

Fandom requires a thicker skin

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-03-23 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
You've got the people who think that fandom is just a hobby, and you've got the people who see fandom as a way of life. The former think that the latter are crazy and childish for sinking so much time into fannish stuff, and the latter think the former aren't real fans and should stop trying to shut them up. The former are likely to think that there is no deeper meaning to the media they consume, and even if there are, they don't care about it because thinking about it requires too much time. The latter are likely to see deeper meanings where there weren't intentionally any (not that they're necessarily wrong) and think watching something just for fun means the watcher is too dumb to see deep meanings. And remember that people are more extreme in their views on the internet because it's easier to tailor the things they see to match and reinforce their own views.

So basically, what I'm saying is, tailor your dashboard and friend list until you only see people who also like meta, even when it's not positive about something.

But You Didn't use the Acronyms so You Are Not a Trufan

All together now, line up on whatever side you belong to, FSErs. I will start us off.

"FIJAGH!"

"FIAWOL!"

And so it goes.

This is part of the reason I basically forged a brand new identity for myself on the net a couple of days ago. I realized that the people I was hanging with in my fandoms fell into one of those two camps, and it was really giving me a headache. So, I cut myself off, backtracked a bit, and I hope I can just enjoy myself without messing around with people who are either thinking I'm taking things too seriously or dumb as a brick.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
This is why I rarely give my honest opinions outside of anon anymore, any criticism is seen as being an extreme hater, and if you like something too much then you must be blind to all it's faults.

I'm a pretty critical person and I think about things a lot so it's hard for me to have an opinion that isn't middle ground and filled with "Well this part was good... but this part was bad..." but that kind of talk doesn't seem to fit in with fandom very well.

The nuance is there, but usually, the two extremes you describe are the ones who shout the loudest.

Oh, we exist. It's just that since we don't 'live' for our fandoms - or watch shows we hate so we can endlessly bitch - we get drowned out.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly this. The middle ground people aren't as interesting as the wank starters or drama queens, so we get ignored.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the current fandom platforms make it harder to both have nuanced conversations and to find like-minded people. Tumblr is very... soundbite. AO3 isn't a place for long, indepth discussions.

Somedays I really miss LJs, IRC and Yahoo email groups.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry, Tabaqui, that was intended as a general reply. I didn't mean to hijack your thread.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I miss when fandom didn't get its panties in a twist over every fucking thing ("baww this show's problematic!!", "baww you're a shitty person for liking this!!", "baww it's not inclusive enough!", "baww so-and-so is trans/PoC/whatever and if you don't agree you're ___ist/phobic!!", "baww this celebrity said ~insert minor problematic thing no one outside of Tumblr would even be aware is problematic~ they're scum of the earth!!") and was able to actually have fun. Tumblr really has sucked the life out of fandom in some ways.

I'm pretty sure that existed before Tumblr. Or, at least it did in my fandoms.

[personal profile] xenomantid 2014-03-25 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
It certainly did. In fact, it goes back to fanzines.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
They exist, but it's both a matter of fandom and platform. Some fandoms are better at this than others. Also, some platforms are more relaxed about "OMG CRITICISM OF MY PRECIOUS" than others. Finding those places for different fandoms (if they exist) is a matter of luck, I guess.

I think there's nuance here.

I'm starting to realize just how much I'm missing by not having a huge presence in other spaces right now...and I think it might be a good thing.
