I'm not that familiar with South Park but...who even would the female character be?

Oh! I didn't know there wes a reoccurring female character. Like I said, I'm pretty ignorant about South Park and only know the boys (and some of the adults).

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep. Wendy is Stan's girlfriend, but she gets quite a few episodes to herself. (Breast cancer show ever, Dances with smurfs, The Hobbit) Then there's the goth girl Henrietta who has appeared more frequently with the other goth kids. There's also Bebe, Wendy's best friend, Nichole, the new character, Kenny's little sister...

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah Wendy would be the only one. But as the OP said, Cartman hates Wendy and would never let him in her group.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 10:39 am (UTC)(link)
And I'd never, ever play her.

And I'm female.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
OP

In the game you play as a new character you create. You get to choose what they look like, but not their gender.

Ooooh. Haha, I want to make a South Park character now. XD

If you're creating an all new character, there's no reason it couldn't be a girl. I don't remember any female characters (only seen about 3 episodes), but it's not like they would have to change the show to fit game canon, so extra girl vs extra boy wouldn't matter.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Actually this is one of those cases where knowing the show and the game is important, because it plays heavily into why there is a boy option and not a girl option.

I normally am all for girl options, but it would not fit the plot of this game at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-23 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm with anon above me. This game bases a lot of the humor on the characters being male. A girl, even a tomboy, wouldn't fit at all. Hell, one of the biggest jokes in the game is when you have to enlist the girls' help on your quest and you get a makeover with a completely different character editor that's more sparkles and rainbows than the one you started the game with.

I'm a girl, and I love South Park, but I would not want to play as a girl in this game. It just wouldn't work.

but this is thinking about the issue backwards.

if the game had been created with a girl pc in mind then the humor of the game wouldn't be based on the pc being male and there wouldn't be any reason not to have a girl pc.

it may not work in the released version of the game, but the publisher/developers could have made a game where it worked.

(for the record, i don't have a horse in this race, i hate south park and i never intend to play the game)

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
DA. While I agree with what you're saying to a point, South Park has the additional issue of canon outside the game, so we're not just talking about the game itself but like 17 years of history with these characters and this world.

If you hate South Park and haven't played the game, I don't recommend commenting on it. Because it's really something you need to be informed about to comment on. I'm honestly not trying to be rude (please don't read my tone as harsh) but from people who have played the game, even the ones who wanted that female option tend to be a little conflicted about it because they realize all the issues that would have come with bringing a female option into that world.

your tone isn't harsh, but your "recommendation" is rude. there's a reason there's no way to say something like that and not sound like it.

it's also a bit curious that you equate hating something with not being informed about it.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-24 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well how informed are you about it? Have you watched the gameplay from start to finish? How familiar are you with South Park?

I'm sorry if I assumed you were not informed wrongly, but you were speaking in generalities and not specifics of the game or the series, and I'm seeing a lot of that going on in this thread for the sake of representation.

I am all for more female representation in games, I just don't think we should make the mistake of trying to back the wrong horse.

Are you kidding me right now? I'm telling you how rude you're being and you want to quiz me on me knowledge about the topic? And you're genuinely expecting everyone who wants to participate in the discussion to have played the entire game?

How much would you like me start questioning your authority on debating about game development? Because quite frankly, that is the only knowledge relevant for the discussion we are having. Because that is why I'm speaking in generalities. This game is not a special case just because it is a game about South Park. The game developers/publisher could have made a game with a playable female character, that is a fact. They made the decision not to do so. Do not absolve them of that decision out of some misguided reverence for the source material.

Except it is relevant to the discussion, the game would not be received as a South Park game just because it has the label "South Park" attached to it. Every franchise has with it certain expectations that come with that franchise and that effects how creators will develop a story.

I would not call it a special case, and yes, they could have made a different story, but I highly doubt it'd be easy to make a story with both a male playable and female playable character. That is the issue. Not even so much that there couldn't be a female protagonist, but because I don't know that there could be one at the same time as the male one. The dialogue, story, and character reactions would all be different if the protagonist was female. This is how South Park runs.

You were responding to a secret and a comment that very much was talking about the rules of the South Park world. If you want to talk about gender inequalities in the gaming industry, go right ahead. But don't challenge specific games unless you know a bit about them.

Are you fucking kidding me right now.

Have you actually read my comments or are you arguing against some random strawman that you've thought yourself up?

Just FYI (different anon) I stopped reading your comments at this point in the thread because you're being so reactionary and stupid. Chill out.

Wendy, Bebe, Red, Nichole, Henrietta, Karen, etc

They made up a male character for the game, hypothetically they could do the same with a female character
nan: (Default)

[personal profile] nan 2014-03-23 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I thought you played as one of the boys rather than create your own character.

I'm not sure but I think you might have the option but yeah there's a generic male character
