I don't think it was retconned by them. I read a quote from Moffat (and this is what I choose to believe) about that line. Basically, Sherlock calls himself a sociopath because he wants to be a sociopath. He wants to be this machine that only focuses on the job and ignores sentiment.

The thing is, he isn't. We know it, John knows it, Lestrade knows it, Mycroft knows it, and deep down, Sherlock probably knows it. But he doesn't want to, because if he cares about other people, he can hurt him.

Sherlock: Sentiment is a chemical defect found in the losing side.

This assumes (incorrectly) that anything Moffat says can be taken as Word of God. It can't. Right or wrong, the man changes his mind to follow the money.

But even if it isn't, I mean we all know Sherlock is not a sociopath. That idea is preposterous.

It's insulting to the original character (that's my problem with BBC Sherlock), but like it or lump it, in-universe BBC Sherlock is "a high-functioning sociopath" and Moffat said in earlier interview this was, indeed the case, and he (Moffat) thought the same of ACD's character as well.

If Moffat has changed his tune since, maybe some of the ACD purists got through to him, IDK. I think the likelihood is higher that he will say what he thinks the vocal part of the fandom wants to hear. Thus, we have series 3.

Well, you just said that we can't really consider Moffat as the word of God. So, based on just what I have seen on the show, there is no way Sherlock is a sociopath.

Well, that's just charming. IIRC, it was one of the behind-the-scenes shows or the DVD extras, for series 2, where Moffat basically says "He's such a psychopath/so focused on his work!" with inordinate glee.

Like I said, it sounds to me like Moffat says whatever he thinks the fandom wants to hear.

Meh, maybe. I don't really care either way, but I don't really pay any of it much attention anymore. *shrug* Other than the bit where Moffat changes tracks, like I said, or a better example, when A Study in Pink aired, the interviews were all about the canon and how faithful they wanted to be to the canon, then by the time A Scandal in Belgravia rolled around, Moffat was suddenly talking about Basil Rathbone's movies, and how they wanted to do a pastiche in the same style.

Plus, there was the whole lies and obfuscation thing around the DW 50th.
