I agree with that.
saturnofthemoon: (Sherlock - Mycroft)

Uh, pretty sure Gatiss and Moffat didn't retcon the sociopath thing. Sherlock still called himself one in "The Last Vow."

He also said it in The Sign of Three.

Oh joy, so we can have him be a sociopath and autistic, since John implied he has Asperger's in the Hound of Baskervilles episode and people ran with it.

*sighs*

I don't think it was retconned by them. I read a quote from Moffat (and this is what I choose to believe) about that line. Basically, Sherlock calls himself a sociopath because he wants to be a sociopath. He wants to be this machine that only focuses on the job and ignores sentiment.

The thing is, he isn't. We know it, John knows it, Lestrade knows it, Mycroft knows it, and deep down, Sherlock probably knows it. But he doesn't want to, because if he cares about other people, he can hurt him.

Sherlock: Sentiment is a chemical defect found in the losing side.

This assumes (incorrectly) that anything Moffat says can be taken as Word of God. It can't. Right or wrong, the man changes his mind to follow the money.

Why is this a secret? I've said this unanon before. It's a ridiculous statement.

There's a lot of people out there who think they're "just like Sherlock" and fandom is more pleasant when you stay away from them.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but... have you SEEN Sherlock fandom? I don't want be on the bad side on some of those fans.

That book was creepy. And not only do I agree I hate how because of that scene in Sherlock, people on the internet are diagnosing themselves as "psychopaths/sociopaths" using Sherlock as a model on how sociopaths should be.

The difference between a sociopath and someone who calls themselves a sociopath through self-diagnosis? An actual sociopath would never give themselves that title. They think they are perfectly fine and the rest of the world is wrong.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-26 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
An actual sociopath would also not tell people they were a sociopath. Seriously.

[personal profile] elephantinegrace 2014-03-26 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
There's no such thing as a sociopath. It's a psychopath.

Not to mention that psychopaths are definitely not sexy, or cool, or anything but extremely dangerous and extremely uncomfortable to be around. They're not charming, either; a complete lack of empathy means they won't know how to gauge what people like, to what degree, or how to imitate it.

Also, there's no such thing as a sociopath. It's psychopath, in case you didn't get it the first time.

First, thanks for the book tip.

Secondly, I though that Sherlock comment was hilarious, because it totally baits all the self-diagnosed speshul snowflakes on tumblr.

after reading that book everyone around me seemed a little more scary lol. but it was highly interesting.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
A. This is as Not!Secret as it gets.

B. They retconned this? Really? Not from what I saw of S3....Unless by "retconned" you mean all the fluffy fanfic idiocy we had to suffer through, from what had at least attempted to present itself as a somewhat intelligent show. At the very start, anyway....

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I used to like Sherlock, but I never liked that quotation.

Now I hate the show. Now I hate the quotation.

It's so wrong and insulting.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That book...

I really strongly doubt that 1 in every 25 people is a sociopath. That is an incredibly large portion of the population, and I'm not sure that we would have been able to form cohesive societies and civilizations were that many people lacking in empathy and conscience.

[personal profile] lex_antonia 2014-03-27 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Everything about that quote is ridiculous. Everything. The difference between psychopaths and sociopaths are unclear, 'high functioning' makes no sense whatsoever in this context, and empathy is a sufficient condition for a conscience,, but by no means a necessary one.

I mean, damn, that quote is stupid. Just like 'the universe is rarely so lazy.' Sometimes I wonder if they write the damn show on mushrooms.

Moffat keeps using the words sociopath and psychopath and I don't think those words mean what he thinks they mean.

That book looks interesting, thanks for the reading rec, OP :) And yeah, Moffat being a shitty writer is never a shock to me :P

(Anonymous) 2014-03-27 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I just don't understand where people get this interpretation of Holmes as a psychopath/sociopath, as canon Holmes is pretty obviously neither.
