Simple:

Doc Ock tried to cure AIDS.

Spider-Man sold his unborn child to Satan and didn't tell his roommate when she was raped by a supervillain until it inconvenienced him.

Little bit of both:

1. Aunt May was shot and Mephisto (who is the Marvel equivalent of Satan) appeared and said "I'll save your aunt if you let me erase your marriage". Peter effectively guilt-tripped MJ into going along with it and Mephisto tells them that in doing so they gave up their future child.

2. Chameleon (who in the arc was depicted as a serial killer) replaced Peter Parker and had an encounter with his roommate (who didn't like Peter). He starts kissing her (which she likes) and the two end up on the floor off-camera. When Peter returns she's a clingy girlfriend and his reaction is "I'll kill you, Chameleon". He only tells her that it was Chameleon at a later date to get her off his back and the whole thing is used as a romantic comedy trope.

Oh and I forgot, when Peter returns, the roommate is wearing his t-shirt and boxers.

Doc Ock has also tried to kill millions of people, on more than one occasion. Occasions on which he was usually stopped by Peter Parker.

Is there something wrong with the idea of just writing him well to not be a whiny idiot? I mean, every superhero has gone through periods of being written to be unbearable, and they've usually gotten past it as soon as they got a writer who knew what s/he was doing.

I agree with the other commenters - I can't see Parker as a dick. But I don't like reading about him at all so I'd be fine if he wouldn't come back.

I wouldn't say Parker is a dick. Boring, yes, a dick no. But even as a boring protag, he is still better than Cyclops over on the X-titles. I would have preferred Spid-ock to continue, that seemed interesting.

But still boring. The character is just one big dramatic-energy sinkhole. Put him in any storyline and it becomes tedious and chorelike everytime he is on the page. Best thing about the X3 Last Stand movie was that it killed Cyc off.
