Rebellious characters

Do you tend to like them or dislike them? If it depends, what is the main thing it depends on for you (not including generic stuff like "being a jerk").

I like 'em, usually quite a lot.

I think for me it depends on if there's a point to the rebellion or if they're just trying to prove that they don't bow to authority. There's a difference between fighting a bad rule and refusing to obey a rule simply because you don't like rules.

I love them by default. They have to be a pretty big asswipe or rebel in some really dumb ways to convince me to stop loving a rebellious character. Even jerky or pointless rebels fill me with glee :D

Depends what you mean by 'rebellious'. Rebellion for the sake of rebellion never appealed to me. I prefer a character to have a concrete reason for standing against whatever they're standing against (doesn't necessarily have to be a good reason, just a real one that they actually believe in).

I like them as long as that doesn't become their only trait. Faith from Buffy was fun because yes, she was the snarky, jaded rebellious type, but she was uneven so you never knew what to expect from her. Katniss from The Hunger Games is pretty much evenly jaded and rebellious, so after a while it gets annoying. It's all about how they're written.

Also, writers, take heed - a female character being rebellious /=/ feminism. You can't say you have a strong female character because she sometimes uses a gun and wisecracks. Just saying.

Depends. If they're just doing dumb things for the sake of it, I don't like them. They just come off as a brat to me. If they're smart and have good reasons to rebel, then I might like them.

This is a good point. I think I tend to like them if they're smart.

It depends on how it's written. Ariel was rebellious, but that was born from her family/culture trying to squash her curiosity. She wasn't annoying about it.

Andrea rebelled against Dale's decree that she not have a weapon. She was in a dangerous world where a weapon could very well keep her alive.

Katara rebelled against the Northern Water Tribe's tradition that women not use their bending to fight. Given that there was a world war going on, that's a pretty justified rebellion.

As long as the character has reasons and isn't just going 'lol i r teenager. i r rebellin' 'gainst ur authoritay' then I'm usually ok with a rebellious character.

TW: suicide

At the point in time when Dale didn't want Andrea to have a weapon, it was because Andrea was a danger to herself and others. (Herself, because she still wasn't over her suicidal hopelessness resulting from losing her sister, and others... shooting and nearly killing Daryl when she did get hold of a gun? Leaving a suicidal Beth alone to cut her wrists?) He wasn't wrong, and her rebellion against his "decree" honestly did come off as a very teenage, "You can't tell me what to do! You're not my dad!"

Agreed about the other characters, though.

I'm not condoning suicide, but I'm not going to judge her advocating that Beth be allowed to make her own choice given the world they live in.

It's been a while since I saw it, but I don't remember her being suicidal or hopeless. Depressed, yeah, but it's a depressing situation. I do remember her being in the trailer without a gun when she needed to kill a zombie that was attacking her.

Daryl was a long ways away, filthy and unrecognizable, and limping. It would be pretty easy to spot that and say 'yup. That's a zombie.' Not saying it was her smartest decision (pointing a weapon at something when you're not absolutely sure what it is? No. The noise from the weapon could've drawn other walkers to the area as well) but shooting at something that looks like a zombie is not an unreasonable decision to make in this world.

Re: TW: suicide

Beth wasn't someone who had thought through her situation seriously and decided to opt out of post-apocalyptic existence; she was an emotionally distraught teenager who was likely to recover and adjust if given time, and who shouldn't have been left alone.

There were already people from her group moving in to deal with the "zombie" Daryl with silent melee weapons, and a single "zombie" against the three armed survivors would not have posed serious danger. Andrea just wanted to show off what a badass she was; there was no practical reason for her to take the shot, and it turned out she almost killed one of their own people.

As far as Andrea herself is concerned, concerns about her potentially still being suicidal were what prompted Dale to take her gun away to begin with. She may or may not have been actively trying to kill herself anymore at that point, but she was definitely reckless and unstable, and I think he was right not to trust her with a firearm at that point.

I like them if they have a cause that makes sense in the context of their world, and they go about their rebellion in an intelligent and interesting way.

Rebels with no cause, rebels with a horrible cause, and rebels who are idiotic about their rebellion bore me at best, and annoy the shit out of me at worst.
