I read an interpretation that made much more sense than the Be-All Free-All anthem most people think it is. Though points don't make a ton of sense - it says that Elsa is finally taking control of her situation and powers by...leaving everyone and not striving towards the recovery path.

Eh, let me find a link.

Was that not was it was supposed to mean? Granted, I haven't seen the movie, but just from watching that scene on YouTube and knowing a little bit about the story, I thought she was singing about how thrilled she was to finally be alone because she liked her powers, but they couldn't be turned off, and now she could relax and use them without having to worry about freezing someone.

The first time I saw it, my immediate thought was "That's the villain song." Of course, it actually is; it started life as just a straight-up villain song, and they had to rewrite the story around it to make Elsa more sympathetic. But it's still, at its core, a villain song.

Elsa's precious freedom is killing people whose well-being she is supposed to be responsible for, and she's singing about how great it is to ditch that responsibility. I'm glad she reverses her selfish, stupid actions later and assumes her responsibilities competently, but I still side-eye the shit out of people who say "Let It Go" is some kind of personal anthem for them.

It's Hakuna Matata. I'm sure if there had been tumblr around when Lion King came out, there would be lots of people sitting around going "But he DID have worries after that, and took responsibility, so it didn't really mean no worries for the rest of your days. And it didn't solve all his problems either."

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean. It's a little subtle, but I feel as though the singing is a little contained for the subject matter. I can't put my finger on it, but something about "I'm free!" Isn't free enough. And the part where she's running up the staircase should sound a little more exhilarated. I think sometimes that Idina was a little more focused on hitting the notes than giving a performance. It gets better towards the end.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Cuz it's not there to begin with. Elsa is very relieved to be away from the castle, but she's still worried about being able to control her powers, and she still believes that the best thing for her sister is that she not be in Anna's life at all, which is not a healthy thing to think.

I think the most telling line is when she sings "I'm never going back". At least to me that line sounded a liiiitle hesitant; she had left everything she knew behind, but it's not like she hated her sister or her kingdom. I think deep down she knew she'd have to go back eventually.

Yeah, her expression there is hesitant as well. Like, as she's actually singing, she's thinking, "Am I making a mistake?"

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Because she isn't really free. This is the halfway point. She still has a huge burden on her shoulders.

Doesn't mean people are wrong to use it as a motivational, though.

This, so much. The song is really only the beginning of Elsa's new journey in the movie. But for me, that doesn't make it less powerful, given that it's one of the few times we see her really happy in the whole film. She's finally accepted part of herself but she still has a way to go before she is truly free.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel it's a bittersweet song. To me that emotion really comes out. She's in quite a frightening situation and trying to comfort herself, being defiant but not really confident about it.

To me that explains why so many people relate to this song.

this

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
This is what I thought about. Maybe it shouldn't sound 'free'because she's only trying to convince herself.

This is how I interpreted it, too.

Yes, that's what it seemed like to me.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's because her voice is relly forced?
Also, I guess you could discuss it bar-by-bar and find that there are a lot of passages in the verse that just... keep it small, instead of, somehow breaking out, but I lack the termini to relly talk about that.

plus, the song may be about freedom, but as far as i can see she's really throwing a teenager tantrum, complete with running away, I hate you all and I'll go have my own party now. so it would make sense to not have her find complete freedom. because it's not complete yet.

Try the German or Dutch version. Compared to them, the English one is rather tame.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry for going a little OTT on you here, but I'd so love to hear Let it go versions in different German dialects. Sadly that's never going to happen.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I like Caleb Hyles Youtube version, it's more emotional to me at least.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
I kinda like how the Korean translation changed the main phrase from "Let it go" to "forget it all" because the feel is different

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
She's still ruled by fear. I understand totally cause I still living in my own kingdom of isolation.

It could have used better instrumentation than piano. I know they probably didn't want to overpower her voice, which is fair because hey, you paid for Idina Menzel so you'd better do it right, but ThePianoGuys did an instrumental version with strings as well as piano. It's got a great, sweeping feel to it that suits the song better, to me.

Elsa has spent her entire life being completely reserved and 'concealing not feeling', so it kind of makes sense that even when she's trying to let go of all that, it's not as bombastic as it could be.
