wait, people are making headcanons about real people? what the hell are they thinking?
i mean, it's okay to make headcanons and give personality traits to the robot personas (and personally i wouldn't even call it rpf), but there's a difference between personas and the real guys under the helmet. they literally created the robot thing because they wanted to avoid having their faces associated with their celebrity status, so idk, i find it kind of disrespectful to go against their wishes in such a way.

I think headcanons are fine. They don't really affect anything. It is when you start to push your headcanons onto the actual people (bringing it up at cons, tweeting them about it, telling them they are actually bi and that it is terrible of them to keep it secret), that it becomes a problem.

I'm kind of two minds about it. In this particular case it does sound disrespectful, but in general, I think it depends on the kind of headcanon made. Like, saying "I think this guy is totally secretly shagging that guy" is pretty creepy, but saying "I like to think that randomname loves chocolate cookies" is more cute than disrespectful. And then there's the question of attitude, of course. And whether the headcanon is likely to be true or not.

I find that gender/sexuality headcanons about RL people (even historical figures) are always either dumb or intensely creepy just because it's that kind of topic.

yeah, i don't mind the "thomas totally loves pepperoni pizza" headcanons, but as soon as gender and sexuality are involved i'm like "nooo go away" because it's so unbelievable creepy. i think speculation on the sexuality of historical figures is fine (as long as it doesn't pretend to be more than mere speculation) but when it comes to living, breathing people who could come across these posts at any time the first reaction i have is "nope nooope delete that post delete your blog and throw water on your keyboard".

I also find (plausible) friendship headcanons far less creepy than romantic/sexual ones. Maybe because they're less invasive.

yeah, it's still a bit invasive but friendship is a safer topic than romance/sex which most people are a lot more private about.

Especially ones that, like kaijinscendre's post above, force an identity on someone "for the good of the community." It's like, you couldn't find a celebrity or promote a newcomer who actually identifies as such, you'd rather force someone into that role?

What are "headcanons" anymore, even? I always thought that it meant "canons in your head" therefore things that you made up in your own little fantasy/fic land. But it really means things you think are real? I am seriously confused about that.

But yeah, I am agreeing with some below people. For certain things, it's okay to do things like headcanons, RPF shipping, tinhatting ONLY if you keep it strictly to yourself and your fandom space and not bug anyone else about it at all (that includes twitter/cons/TPTB for canon tinhatting, AND arguing with other fans who disagree.)

But I am never, ever going to stop judging people who say things about their sex lives. "Oh I bet ___ is a good lover." "I bet ___ and ___ have hot kinky sex after each show." "That's cum stains on his clothing!" I HATE YOU YOU CREEPY DISGUSTING PERVS THAT'S GROSS! Keep it to fanfic. ONLY FANFIC. So I don't have to read it!

Yes. Fans need to not post or tweet or message their significant ships to tell the people how much they KNOW or WANT them to be with someone sexually or belong with someone like a soulmate. Like no. I get it when there's a little fantasy going on and people can create crazy things via imagination (I do rpf myself but I keep it behind closed communities and don't advertise it or overthink it) but when you start obsessing about it and not seeing the reality, it's crossing the line.
There are things that just are not respectful no matter how hard fans try to justify their creepy actions.

For OP, some parts in fandoms are created to unleash the weirdest fantasies or are provoked and whether to stay or leave is a matter of knowing how far you really want to go and what's comfortable for you.
