wait, people are making headcanons about real people? what the hell are they thinking?
i mean, it's okay to make headcanons and give personality traits to the robot personas (and personally i wouldn't even call it rpf), but there's a difference between personas and the real guys under the helmet. they literally created the robot thing because they wanted to avoid having their faces associated with their celebrity status, so idk, i find it kind of disrespectful to go against their wishes in such a way.

I think headcanons are fine. They don't really affect anything. It is when you start to push your headcanons onto the actual people (bringing it up at cons, tweeting them about it, telling them they are actually bi and that it is terrible of them to keep it secret), that it becomes a problem.

...what did I just read...?

An idiot emailing a member of Game Grumps telling him he is bi. He emails her back and says, No he is not. In later posts he emails her again telling her that is was rude and distasteful of her to posts the emails online.

...WOW...

Wow. What the fuck. Newfound respect for Arin for having the patience of a saint about the whole thing.

Never ever ever search the Merlin tag on Tumblr. Trust me. Delusional does not even begin to describe it. (Seriously. We are talking SPN levels of tinhattery here.)

I'm kind of two minds about it. In this particular case it does sound disrespectful, but in general, I think it depends on the kind of headcanon made. Like, saying "I think this guy is totally secretly shagging that guy" is pretty creepy, but saying "I like to think that randomname loves chocolate cookies" is more cute than disrespectful. And then there's the question of attitude, of course. And whether the headcanon is likely to be true or not.

I find that gender/sexuality headcanons about RL people (even historical figures) are always either dumb or intensely creepy just because it's that kind of topic.

yeah, i don't mind the "thomas totally loves pepperoni pizza" headcanons, but as soon as gender and sexuality are involved i'm like "nooo go away" because it's so unbelievable creepy. i think speculation on the sexuality of historical figures is fine (as long as it doesn't pretend to be more than mere speculation) but when it comes to living, breathing people who could come across these posts at any time the first reaction i have is "nope nooope delete that post delete your blog and throw water on your keyboard".

I also find (plausible) friendship headcanons far less creepy than romantic/sexual ones. Maybe because they're less invasive.

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-03-29 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, it's still a bit invasive but friendship is a safer topic than romance/sex which most people are a lot more private about.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Also less common. As in, not even very common at all. :-P

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
why is it any creepier than contemplating which member of One Direction is dating which actress or something like that? Is it just because it's GAY? Because that is gross.

Especially ones that, like kaijinscendre's post above, force an identity on someone "for the good of the community." It's like, you couldn't find a celebrity or promote a newcomer who actually identifies as such, you'd rather force someone into that role?

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
What are "headcanons" anymore, even? I always thought that it meant "canons in your head" therefore things that you made up in your own little fantasy/fic land. But it really means things you think are real? I am seriously confused about that.

But yeah, I am agreeing with some below people. For certain things, it's okay to do things like headcanons, RPF shipping, tinhatting ONLY if you keep it strictly to yourself and your fandom space and not bug anyone else about it at all (that includes twitter/cons/TPTB for canon tinhatting, AND arguing with other fans who disagree.)

But I am never, ever going to stop judging people who say things about their sex lives. "Oh I bet ___ is a good lover." "I bet ___ and ___ have hot kinky sex after each show." "That's cum stains on his clothing!" I HATE YOU YOU CREEPY DISGUSTING PERVS THAT'S GROSS! Keep it to fanfic. ONLY FANFIC. So I don't have to read it!

Basically yeah. I think.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Fans need to not post or tweet or message their significant ships to tell the people how much they KNOW or WANT them to be with someone sexually or belong with someone like a soulmate. Like no. I get it when there's a little fantasy going on and people can create crazy things via imagination (I do rpf myself but I keep it behind closed communities and don't advertise it or overthink it) but when you start obsessing about it and not seeing the reality, it's crossing the line.
There are things that just are not respectful no matter how hard fans try to justify their creepy actions.

For OP, some parts in fandoms are created to unleash the weirdest fantasies or are provoked and whether to stay or leave is a matter of knowing how far you really want to go and what's comfortable for you.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
You should check out KPop fandom sometimes, they have real golden moments.

I would nope out of this community with the speed of light. Fans actively invading the creators ` privacy and being generally disrespectful is my nightmare. I get weirdly protective of the creators of my canons, and even if rpf people are not being harmful, I feel weird about interacting with them in the context of the fandom in question.

But then again, it's my sore spot. So, if they're not harassing the members of the band, maybe you can remain a member of the comm and just cut down on your own contribution to such discussions. Depends on how uncomfortable you are.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't ever really be okay with RPF of any kind. Normal social lines get crossed way too easily in those circles for my comfort.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-29 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You'd think that this would be a perfect opportunity for harmless rpf shipping, because their performance personae are so explicitly separate from their RL identities. But nooo...
I really feel this. I prefer rpf fic in which only public figures are characters, and people like spouses and family members just don't exist.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
I've got to say, having been in similar bordering-on-creepy-only-getting-creepier comms in my youth for much the same reasons as you (trying to stop lurking, and tolerating creepier bits of the community because they otherwise seemed fun) it will most likely get worse. And never get better.

If I were you, I would keep the friends you've made on your watchlist (or whatever it is in tumblr) but nope out of the community as nonchalantly as possible. If you're conflicted about doing this, remember: if these people have different views on something so seemingly clearcut as 'don't make creepy headcanons about the gender identity and sexuality of real people', then imagine all the other ways they are probably not your kind of people, deep down.

Don't let them suck you down with them.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
You can try being honest to the people you think you could be friends with. Just tell them that the comm isn't what you thought it'd be and it's getting a little too much for you to handle. You might have other interests you can fall back on. Maybe some of them aren't as serious about the rpf as they appear. And if they are and don't like what you have to say, then it sounds like you didn't want to talk to them anymore anyway.

Wait, what? There aren't real people under there. They're two robots. Gosh, I thought everyone knew that.

(Anonymous) 2014-03-30 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
in the SPN fandom RPF is really common. Really common...

I read it (because some of the writers are good, and I like the story content) but I pretend they are characters (like, you know, the actual characters on the show!!) because writing about real people weirds me out. I don't understand getting obsessed like that. And it makes me uncomfortable.
