That person's behavior was rude but I do think sometimes that it's silly how often people equate emotional reserve in characters to autism. Sometimes people aren't particularly expressive.

I agree that headacanoning everyone who MAYBE COULD BE as autistic as autistic is overdoing it. This is coming from an autistic person.

I'd like to see some more non-stereotypical representation but I'm still very careful about headcanoning characters as that. So far I only have a few serious ones. A big one being Lilo from Lilo and Stitch because she just fits all the symptoms PERFECTLY. But other than that Idk....representation is good and important and all...and headcanoning people as being part of group is well and good if they fit. But projecting it on to EVERYONE is overdoing it and sorta cheapens it in a way.

If that all makes sense...

No, I totally agree with this.

Especially seeing as people oversimplify and use outdated stereotypes as their reasoning.

Yeah. A lot of people tend to assume autistic people are good at math for example or are just like savants.

Stereotypes like that ignore that some autistic people are better in other areas or don't have a'genius IQ' or are mild enough to be able to take care of themselves and live a fairly normal life.

You're right; the lecture was on autism tropes in media, not autism in real life.

It was a discussion on autism tropes in media, and I made sure to not assign diagnoses to any characters. I think that idiot was either trying to get attention or trying to get himself expelled. Because the way he was acting was really rude and the class ended up going over because we spent so much time getting him to shut up.

Autism has became a buzword. When people say "X character is autistic", they are just saying "they're socially retarded".

fuck off

Make me. Oh wait you can't.

Re: Slightly related

Actually autism is a collection of symptoms that include but are not limited to social difficulties and there's also a spectrum of autism that ranges from minor to 'can't communicate' in some cases. Autism is the name of a disorder, not a buzzword or euphemism. It's respectful to refer to a disorder by its proper name.

Re: Slightly related

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
I know, I wasn't talking about the actual disorder but how certain people uses the word autism in fandom nowadays. Have any character be slightly weird or asocial, and you'll have people saying that the character is autistic.

Yup. People don't seem to realize how offensive that is.

Ahem, I'd like to point you to that place in my comment where I said, "autism tropes in media," thank you.

Oh, sorry, you're right, I mistyped.

"-sees "buzword-" and "-sees R word-" should switch places.

They must be a troll because they said "retarded"? Even though basically everyone who's not a tumblr SJW uses the word "retarded"? I'm not going to argue about whether we should because we'll be here all day but seriously, you need to get out more if you think saying retarded makes someone a troll.

Re: Slightly related

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
No we'd be here for about 3 seconds: it's a horrible word, stop using it if you respect your fellow man remotely.

Wow I sure am convinced by that great argument. Seriously, don't start this shit.

lol where do you live? Because it's definitely not socially acceptable here.

Re: Slightly related

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
New Zealand, but I see it a lot online as well, including on tumblr. Most of the time nobody says anything about it. In the context of saying "socially retarded" it's even less offensive.

Maybe it is just a regional thing though.

This.

Re: Slightly related

(Anonymous) 2014-04-02 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Fair enough generally, but I don't think it's much of a stretch to think Haru might have autism. It's not just being socially reserved, it's the obsession with water, not being able to communicate with or understand others very well, taking everything said at face value and missing social cues, not understanding socially appropriate behaviour etc.

He certainly reminds me a lot of my autistic brother.
