Books aren't created for that purpose. They're a form of entertainment.

Some books are and some books aren't.

Social commentary, education, and cook books are also valid.

Social commentary isn't exclusive to non-fiction.

Fiction can be pure entertainment for someone and a mind-opening experience to someone else and a mix of the two for a third person and something personally meaningful but not really profound to another person and so on and on. I don't think this is something where you can speak in universals.

I like to read things that expose me to different points of view but I don't think that's the Correct way to read. It's just one way that some people find admirable.

Reading is not the only way to grow.

Also, enjoyment and growth are not mutually exclusive.

What you think is unique to writing? I'm curious.

What are the things that are unique to literature that aren't in other forms of art or expressions of thought? I love literature too and I'd be interested in hearing your answer.

I think it makes sense and I agree about the exchange of ideas. I think there are trade-offs with other forms of art though. The blanks you are filling in with your imagination are different but to my mind they are still there. For example, I love paintings that seem to be telling a story, especially ones that are surreal and the imagery that tells that story is more symbolic than a straightforward depiction of events.

I don't know if I would say that 75% of movies or TV are already interpreted. I feel like you're focusing on the visual. Maybe it's because I don't usually have a very clear picture of characters I read about in my head. I'm usually way more focused on trying to empathize with their thoughts and feelings and that process is pretty much the same in a movie for me.

Well, two other people already asked you what you think is so unique to literature, so I will ask you another question.

I've noticed that you mention a lot that no one cares what you think. Why do you believe that? I think a lot of people care what you think. I do.

I like to read anthologies of sci fi stories, which are a serious mixed bag of quality, interest, varying social commentaries, and whatnot. Sometimes they make me think, sometimes they don't. Sometimes they give me ideas, sometimes they don't. Sometimes I like them, sometimes I don't.

But none of that will change the fact that the only reason that I picked up those anthologies is for the sake of entertainment.

This baffles me. I can enjoy something and be enriched by it at the same time, which is a balance I seek to reach in my reading choices (and my learning choices). I could pick up a lot of things that I know for a fact I won't enjoy but will make me "grow", and it will slide out of my awareness like melted butter the minute I put it down, like most things I don't enjoy and can't make practical use of.

There are ways to grow besides reading, and there is nothing wrong with reading what you enjoy. Not everyone is going to want to force themselves through something they hate simply for the sake of something, that is frankly abstract at best, growth.

Plus reading doesn't automatically mean someone will learn from it anyways.

And for the record, I say this as someone whose been accused of reading far too much multiple times [and, oddly enough, by both teachers and my parents]. So I'm not saying this because I hate reading.
