it looks as if everything is on fire

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
that would be because everything is on fire, actually!

I read this comic and on that page everything is indeed supposed to be on fire.

If it's a webcomic and it's not Penny Arcade, name the fandom!

Ava's Demon. I don't read it, but no other comic has that palette plus that art style. (And yeah, I can see how it would get tiresome.)

Why if it's not Penny Arcade? That seems like such a random rule.

Ahem

Think Homestuck gets a pass at this point too.

ooh thank you for this info.

Why would this opinion make you a bad artist?

It is notoriously difficult to get red to look good in pretty much any medium. A red-based comic would drive me nuts too.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, the comic isn't always this red, only in certain times. The artist does has a penchant for those kind of bright monochromatic and tertiary color palettes, which can get painful on the eyes.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 03:42 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree with this, when you use darker tones like maroon or burgundy it's fine.

My problem is a bit of the opposite: have no problem with the colors and stuff (the comic is really gorgeous), but I really wish I could care about the characters more.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I think her color use is outstanding, but none of these characters are interesting. Maybe Odin, he's kind of my type.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
agreed. while they have their moments (when Ava demanded a second chance at life, for example), most of them are pretty same-y and kinda assholes in an annoying way. Doesn't help that you can't convey a lot with such a slow moving story.

[personal profile] ex_mek82 2014-04-07 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yanno, you're right.

I got into Ava's Demon not long after it started. I thought it looked amazing and the way it was set up was very professional and slick. Eventually, I started to archive*binge it, since the story was moving fairly slowly at that point in time. I stopped reading after the Christmas/Kickstarter hiatus and only recently caught up with it because I was bored one afternoon. And tbh, I'm contemplating dropping it from my webcomic 'must read' list.

It's a *beautiful* looking comic, no questions. But when I started to dig past the prettiness, I'm finding I'm wanting so much more in terms of characterization. =/ I agree with one of the anons above me, in that the characters are all kind of assholes and not in the likable sort of way. I get why from a story standpoint (Ava in particular), but IMHO, they're just not all that memorable. I couldn't even name a single character besides Ava and maybe Odin. At least with something like Homestuck (which if I'm not mistaken, the creator of Ava's Demon is/was a fan of), every character has some defining trait/personality that makes them stand out. Here...? Not so much.

Why would that make you a bad artist? People have different preferences for colour palettes; I see it a lot with the different people in my class. Some gravitate to neon and some to cooler tones.

On that note, I really wish we had a colour theory class because I feel like I really need one. @___@

What bugs me about this comic (and others) is the thing where it's just a single frame each time. I tried reading it, but I just couldn't maintain interest in single-frame updates, and some part of me gets so irrationally annoyed at jut having that one frame that I eventually kind of quit.

/tangent

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It's like a storyboard. Instead of 'summarizing' the action like most other comics do, this one portrays most of every action in individual frames. like, one frame is a character lifting an arm and the next frame is the character lowering the arm, without it having any meaning on impact on our understanding of the character. That's fine if you're going to animate it later, but as a comic it's just exhausting and makes the pacing glacial.

That white text against bright yellow is giving you more "bad artist" points imo.
