rubbertea: joly from les mis side-eyeing you (joly judging people while high)

yeah maybe, but buying fanfiction seems like such a waste of money. you can't hang it on your bedroom walls, for one.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
But I already spend money on all sorts of things that have no longevity whatsoever on a daily basis anyway. I think it's exciting to pay for something that then needs to be created in order to exist.

well, different people spend their money differently i guess. i tend to be the parsimonious type.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
da, offtopic
parsimonious, what a nice word.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
But then so's buying e-books? Can't really hang those on the wall, either.

you can't exactly find free, legal, e-books laying around on the internet, though, can you?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I honestly do not know whether you're trolling or if you've never heard of works in the public domain and places like the Gutenberg Project.

of course i know about this. i thought it was a given. but these books have been out for years and years. there's no comparison to be made with fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
You're also aware that there's a lot of contemporary original fiction available for free on the internet? Not just books out of copyright, like Gutenberg, or fanfic, but authors who put their e-books online for free?

Aparently on amazon there's a whole section of free e-books (short stories to full novels). I don't use it myself (too many technical issues each time, complete headache) but I'm reliably told that's the case.

Personally, I get my free novels/short stories mostly from the writers' own blogs or sites. It's really quite common, especially for new writers. Or more established writers may offer their back catalogue this way.

Are these comparisons perhaps closer?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
same anon above

Just to explain further, I have over 110 books/short stories on my e-reader right now. All except 2 of them were downloaded for free, completely legally as well.

The 2 books on my e-reader that I actually paid for were also once free e-books. But the writer recently struck a major publishing deal and I thought I'd support her by buying the books I already read for free, when they were up on her blog.

Yes, you can.

That's obnoxious.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 02:12 am (UTC)(link)
so is that person being ignorant

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
aside from Project Gutenberg, there are literally hundreds-- maybe thousands-- of free ebooks on Amazon and other ebook sites.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't understand your reasoning at all. I buy a lot of things I can't hang on my bedroom wall, including books both print and ebooks. If art isn't a waste of money, than neither is the written word.

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-04-06 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
well i don't understand why someone would pay for fic, so i guess we have to agree we don't understand each other and leave it at that

(Anonymous) 2014-04-06 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay. Except that I'm not going to call buying fanart "a waste of money".

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Making this high-minded bid for "let's just agree to disagree" comes off as really, really insincere since you've already declared the other side to be wasting their time by liking what they like. It's like being that person in a debate who makes a lot of passive-aggressive ad hominem attacks and then when people call them on it for being a douche, steps back and informs everyone that the debate ought to be civil because we're all rational adults, blah blah blah.

I hadn't thought of you as a troll prior to reading your comments in this thread and now I'm super confused.

[personal profile] rubbertea 2014-04-07 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
i didn't say "wasting their time", i said "wasting their money". if you wanna quote me, at least do it right.

i said something, people answered, i realized their point of view is valid but that i don't understand it. it's not some grand trolling strategy or something like that. i wouldn't throw away weeks of interacting with users here just to rustle your (general you) jimmies. i don't think i made ant ad hominem attacks or anything like that, but i realize my comments came off as a bit prissy and/or agressive. can't change 'em i guess, but i thought i'd stopped the "debate" before i said something i'd regret.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-07 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
DA

The misquote doesn't invalidate the criticism, though. I, too, was taken aback by your "wasting money" remark, too. It came off as unnecessarily harsh and dismissive. I wouldn't dream of telling someone that the things they purchase are a waste of money, just... wow.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-08 03:29 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't tend to hang novels or books of short stories on your wall; they tend to go on the bookshelf.
