[Korn; Breaking Benjamin]

Shit, this is as bad all the definitions of sexuality/gender/etc. etc. etc.

It's rock.

Relax.

You are perfectly willing to plot out some incredibly in-depth spectrum about which kind of ROCK MUSIC you like, but, for goodness sake, it's still ROCK MUSIC.

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-09 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
This might be a stupid question, but what would you consider relaxing? To put that a different way, would you not consider me relaxed so long as I continued to dislike bands like Korn?

Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-09 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
No, you should totally dislike whoever you like. I don't like either band you listed, actually. It's the need to shove everything into tiny sub-categories that...seems exhaustive.

I don't know what any of these words mean. :(

OP

(Anonymous) 2014-04-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, post-grunge is descended from grunge, which was what Kurt Cobain, Pearl Jam, etc. were doing back in the '90s. Post-grunge is a bit more melodic and polished than grunge was, which I suppose you could argue misses the point, but I think it strikes a nice balance between the beautiful and the messy. Three Days Grace is one of my favorite bands in the genre--"Pain," "Riot," "I Hate Everything About You," etc. (Though I concede they do get a bit overwrought at times, and they're definitely not for all tastes.)

Nu-metal is that concert at the beginning of Brutal Legend. It's really screechy, really whiny, and it has an alarming tendency to try to incorporate rap. Korn's actually one of the BETTER bands in the genre (and I will give them credit for some decent songs like "Evolution.") Linkin Park's sometimes good as well.

I adore TDG, including those songs, and I'll be the first to admit, they're totally melodramatic. It's one reason I love them :)

Since you seem to have (imo) really cool taste, can I ask for some recs? Specifically, I recently came across a Breaking Benjamin song that I really like, and I've never heard them before; what are your favorites from them?

Uh. KoRn and Breaking Benjamin are pretty damn mainstream as far as rock goes.

Dude, Breaking Benjamin (along with Atreyu and Lamb of God) was like THE band of the myspace days.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-09 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
a) the reason they can't tell it apart is because the difference is pretty small, shades of grey stuff

b) ngl i think both of these bands are pretty crappy. sorry, OP.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-09 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I had never heard of post-grunge before. These ever tinier sub-genres, who can keep up with them?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-10 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm just smirking and wondering if I should fork over some of my cash to that airhead Skrillex just because that guy never ever gave a damn about genres in the first place.
Seriously, watching people online argue about different types of music is the some of the best entertainment the 'Net has to offer.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-10 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like either of them, but good god are you overthinking this.

Just listen to music.
Why give half a shit about all this genre fuckery? Are you trying to get into the cool kids' music club, or something?

Just avoid this issue by saying "Yeah I like [band]," instead of "Yeah I like [genre]."
It's not that hard.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2014-04-10 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
They still pretty much both fall under the umbrella of "music for wangsty teenagers", but that said I think both bands have merit and I do enjoy both in their own way.

The difference is pretty clear in the actual sound and choice of instruments though. I feel like most people can tell the difference between the more lyrical alternative sound of BB and the more metal/rap sound of Korn. If we're comparing music for music's sake they really don't sound anything alike.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-10 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think you are confusing Korn for Linkin Park, I've seen that lots of Korn songs are less about parents and phonies and teenage angst and more about abuse, molestation, neglect, mental illness and loss to suicide/drugs/accidents. Turns out the lead singer was abused as a child.

I like to call this general genre of music "Middle School".

Yeah I'm so much more mature now, listening to Top 40s!

Those kinds of comments are odd to me because Rock was never a popular genre in my middle school and high school years... House, Pop, Techno, Hip Hop was where it was all at.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-10 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
I like to call this sort of opinion "childish."
gondremark: (Default)

[personal profile] gondremark 2014-04-10 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, now you point out the difference I can see it. Neither type of music is my thing, but Korn (to me) is obnoxious senseless noise and Breaking Benjamin is just music that I personally don't like.

But yeah, I [used to] just lump it all under numetal.
For a while I was having to explain that "I like metal" is not tantamount to "I like Korn and Slipknot"; I like Iron Maiden and Blind Guardian and Ensiferum.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-10 11:06 am (UTC)(link)
I thought we got over shitting on nu metal a long time ago.
gondremark: (Default)

[personal profile] gondremark 2014-04-11 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Fun story. Back when I first started getting into Metal, I didn't realise that numetal was a real genre name. I thought it was a disparaging term for shallow noisy crap that people didn't like.
