Re: Have you ever liked a movie/tv show better then the book it's based on?

Hunger Games - I maintain that the movies have made Katniss infinitely more likeable, and not being tied to Katniss's point of view really expands the story.

Lord of the Rings - I read the books, yes, before the movies came out. And they were dry. I did like them, and their weird quirk that the movies didn't have. But ultimately, I think the movies were better paced, condensed the story in a positive way (no, Tom Bombadil was not important to the story!) and were visually striking.

I love the Hunger Games movies for the same reason. Katniss's view limits a lot of things and I love how they transformed the Capitol and gave us a bit more on the background details of the actual running of the Games.

AYRT. I definitely agree about LOTR and that's one of the books I was thinking of when I asked the question. I thought the movie adaptations did an excellent job of really taking out what was interesting about that world and hitting on what we really needed to see. The LOTR movies kind of prove that condensing a story isn't always a bad thing.

The LotR movies did have a better pace.

They were worse in every other way, though. Sorry. I can't do it. They were not nearly as good as the books, the visual appearance and the depiction of the world was laughable, and the emotional through-lines hardly translated at all.

ayrt

I disagree with most of what you're saying, but I do agree that the depiction of the world was largely different. Even the elves were kind of different. The movies played off the popular image of Tolkien's world, I think, when his world is a bit more quirky than that.

To be honest, though, I don't think any of Tolkien's dialogue was particularly emotional. The characters weren't "real" at all to me, they were walking mouthpieces of exposition with all the authenticity of character interactions in the Bible or a history textbook or something. I think (most of) the cast of LOTR really tried to breathe some life into those lines, and for the most part, did a good job.

My opinion on The Hobbit movies is, to note, completely opposite of my opinion on LOTR.

The emotion wasn't usually on the surface, and it wasn't usually very interioristic, but it was definitely present. And I think they completely changed the character of Aragorn for the worse, and I think Elijah Wood's performance was completely melodramatic and almost ridiculous, and those are the two most important characters emotionally. Sam was alright although a little over-exaggerated but those are big changes and definitely negative IMO.

Seconding the Hunger Games. My sister told me the second book's much better than the first but I really didn't like the first book.

Your sister is lying. :P I think even among fans it is generally agreed that the first is the best in the series, so if you didn't like that...

Agreeing on Hunger Games. I enjoyed the books, but I honestly think the movies are better. It's the only movie/book I've ever felt that way about.

I totally agree about the Hunger Games. I like that it expanded on the worldbuilding and details and stuff, because I eat that kind of thing up with a spoon XD

I think the only thing I haven't liked about the movie adaptations is that they left out Katniss and Peeta finding out how Haymitch won his games, and thus the forcefield around the arena seems like it came out of nowhere (at least that's what my friends who haven't read the books say).

Even as someone who read the books, I agree with your friends who haven't.

I wish they'd included it, partly to make that plot point make more sense, and partly because I love Haymitch and wanted everyone to see him being awesome.

"More Haymitch" is pretty much the sum total of my Mockingjay wishlist.

How did he win the games?

He ran to the very edge of the arena and found out about the forcefield surrounding it. His last opponent threw an axe at him, but Haymitch ducked, then it bounced back off the forcefield and killed his opponent.

I thought they did the love triangle better in the movie than in the books. And the last scene of the first book, with the genetically modified beasts, was always going to be better on film.

Otherwise, I preferred the books.

I gave up on Lord of the Rings when Elrond started droning off a five page legend during the council. Yes, world-building is good, but a sense of urgency? Anyone?

A good 70% of the time at least, Tolkien seemed obviously more interested in showing off his language skills and massive worldbuilding than he was about actually telling a logical story. Most of the characters are apt to go on long ten hour speeches about something not remotely relevant, just so Tolkien could work it all in there.

(and I am a LOTR fan, honest)

I agree that the pacing of the books is a bit... stop and start. The movie paced better, making the start of the story (like, about the first half of FotR) not so slow and languid as the book.

Though I did manage to get through the Council of Elrond, though I view it as very much an all-day affair, with people giving long, involved tales from multiple POVs.

On the other hand, I do feel the book gives more idea of how slow a journey across vast distances, on foot, would end up feeling. For the Fellowship, there would be parts of the journey that felt slow and non-urgent, despite what they logically know.

I didn't like the Hunger Games books, but got talked into seeing the first movie because people talked up the cinematography so much. Not only was it beautifully shot, it took a story that I'd only been marginally interested in on paper and turned it into something that made me cry and pinned me to my seat.

God yes on LotR. I just can't get into Tolkien's writing style. All three LotR books were kind of a slog to me, and I got like five pages into Silmarillion before I gave up.

The movies on the other hand were quite nice. I was irritated at some bits, namely what they did with Faramir, but otherwise I prefer them to the books.
