working on any original writing lately f!s?

[personal profile] yield 2014-04-20 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't dabble much with anything but fic (and that rarely these days), but lately my mind had been tossing around a few character ideas and world building things. problem is i can't actually come up with any kind of uhhh well, you know, actual plot to write about lol. have you been up to any writing or planning this weekend?

I'm always planning new original stories because it's pretty much a hobby unto itself at this point. I love coming up with characters and plots and settings even if I'll never have time to write about all of them. The past few days I've been going through some of the random pieces of writing I started years ago and seeing if there are any salvageable ideas in there.

i hope you find something you want to work with! i find the day dreaming aspect of writing, fic or original, much more fun and satisfying than you know. actually writing. it's not a bad hobby to have.

Sometimes I have plot, but the characters aren't fleshed out. Sometimes, I have kickass characters who are interacting so well, and it turns out I don't have enough of a plot to propel them along.

I'm going to try to get back to one of my long stalled fanfics, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to eat some chocolate eggs. Hope things work out better for you! :D

I have the opposite problem. I can write detailed plot summaries for novels, but cannot actually write the damn things.

I have a four book fantasy series heavily plotted out, but the writing just won't come.

that's rough anon :/ fingers crossed that one day soon a bug will bite you and you can put all that hard plotting work into action!

Me too. I have notebooks and folders of about 5 novels-worth of ideas. Character notes, plot points, research, maps, worldbuilding notes, timelines etc. Detailed chapter plans even.

Then I try to write the actual words and I get to about chapter 6 and burn out each time. I can see the rest of the story in my head but the writing won't come.

Meanwhile, I have another urgent idea for the next two or three stories.

My strategy now is just to get down as many notes as possible. I'm hoping that one day in the future, my ideas will magically dry up, while my writing will come more easily, perhaps with practice, and I'll be glad for my idea notebooks.

My other way of working through the problem is to gradually practice finishing short stories, and to slowly increase their wordcount. The main problem with this is that I only really like nice long novels, both to read and to write. Unfortunately my writing powers don't yet match up to that.

i can definitely understand. part of me finds original writing so...well pointless lol. because i don't have any desire to try and publish or anything like that. fic is easier and people will actually care! it's a bad attitude but i can't deny that part of my desire to write is for the notes/kudos/general attention :p

I have at least three fanfics I want to finish before I get back to the novel* I'm stalled on. I'm not even working on my current fic right now, since I'm behind on homework. And I'm not even working on homework because I keep getting bored.

* Realistically, it'll end up between 17k and 19k words. Just like all my other attempts at "novels." I don't seem to have enough to say about any subject to support a proper-length novella about it, let alone a novel.

Working on some original stories, yes. Original writing, not so much -_-; Very often they don't get to the writing stage, I just spend months or years living out the stories in my head for my own entertainment, coming up with new ones whenever I feel the need.

I've tried writing a few. There's a substory of one of my bigger universes that I've been meaning to try actually writing down for a while, or even just a story from it. In the middle of one of my big plot-and-politics heavy fantasy universes there's this pair of older characters who were lovers years ago but gave each other up for largely political reasons, reasons which are currently being rendered, if not moot, at least significantly less pertinent than they were fifteen years ago. They give a nice window on the universe as a whole, this pair, and I've wondered if maybe I could just get down the conversation where they realise this, then it might serve as a nice little glimpse of the world.

Also, I just like this pair. I mean, I like all my characters, obviously, but these two are just sneaky and twisty and tragic and I love them.

I'm about halfway through a story, which would be finished weeks ago if I hadn't installed Saints Row the Third. Also, one (intended to be way long) that I started, then decided I needed to rethink some of the plot. And I'm trying to come up with a plot to build around a drawing I did a while back...

I got some writing done for my new story yesterday. I'm struggling to transition from editing one to starting out from nothing with another. I haven't had a transition quite like this before. But yesterday went better than I expected. The planning phase is always hard.

I've been doing a lot of it yeah. Lots of little pieces as well as planning for future stories. At some point this month I'm going to actually get around to writing the novel.

One time when I was grounded from the internet and bored, I made a little random generator toy that gave me two original characters (from one of my various project ideas) and a world to set it in. I've been doing a lot of writing based on the results of those, some of which can be found on my DW account here.

I love them , they're addictive like candy.

Yep! For school and hopefully someday soon, publication. I don't start with plot. I start with a basic idea, an image or a sentence that pops into my mind. Sometimes I keep a list of ideas for later use (though my computer died recently, so a lot was lost). Or I write about my current mood, or I just write out my daydreams. When all else fails I write self-indulgent smut, and...sometimes that leads to a plot, because it's a great way to get into the characters' minds and get them talking to each other. Like maybe right in the middle of sex they realize the oven's on, so they jump out of bed but as they're running down the hall, there's a knock on the door. It's a police officer. See, I just came up with that and now I wanna write it but I have to do a research paper so.../saves for later! You can use it if you want.

I'm always working on something, usually a comic or novel of some kind, but right now I'm not entirely set on finishing things. I used to get really worked up trying to finish projects for the sake of finished projects, but I realized that was needlessly stressful and it was making me frustrated at my own pet projects. So I'm just playing and developing stories and keeping it somewhere so I can look at it, but not to stress out about it. I'm young, I got time and other things to worry about.

I have several ideas bouncing around in my head (two major ones) but I'm not sure if they're any good or not, or even where I really want to go with them. It's been so long since I wrote anything that wasn't poetry or fanfic that I've lost confidence in my abilities. :(

yay a writing thread!

i'm finally starting to actually want to write again, and there's the narrative going in my head again

but my motivation to actually sit down and write has been very low

(I had depression for the last three years, and that pretty much killed my interest in everything I enjoyed.)

I've got three original ideas that I've planned out, and also just recently got some ideas for fanfics. one for Person of Interest, one for Hannibal, and another for the recent Spiderman film.

here's hoping I can start to make it a daily habit!

Yeah, I'd say I'm in the same boat as most everyone else here with the whole "got a ton of ideas bouncing around, no actual drive to put them to writing." I'd definitely agree with what you said about the daydreaming aspect being more fun than the actual writing! Sometimes before I go to sleep I sort of play little scenarios with my characters in my head like a movie or something. I'm probably never gonna really write anything serious with them just because I don't think I could really make that a priority in my life, but I have been kind of toying with the idea of getting back into roleplaying. Like the whole shebang on a forum as opposed to lj/tumblr/whatever.
But this thread makes me happy, I just really like hearing about other people's inspirations and characters and whatever! :D

ye but i feel you about the plot struggle. i tend to write myself into corners a lot with original fiction. non-fiction is much easier for me because of that, but i always wonder if my real life stories will be interesting to anyone else.

I've been outlining an original fiction idea throughout this semester. I'm hoping to knock out a rough draft of it over summer break, though...we'll see. I'm taking 4 classes in the summer and working.

I'm working on fleshing out some of my characters and coming up with stories to put them in. I'm also doing some research for use in plotting out some scenarios I've come up with. I need to get the lead out on this, especially if I want to have enough material to start up my short fiction blog this summer. It's been kind of rough to get motivated lately because at the moment all I want to do is start on the next chapter of my Pokemon/Voyager fic.

I've got a couple of works in progress that are all at various stages of written. My three main works in progress are: almost 5k words about a dysfunctional family whose dynamics are changed when their father dies of cancer; a little bit over 5k words about a student who dreams of crimes; and about 20+k about my own interpretation of Snow White in which she has a functioning family unit. I'm in the planning stages of writing a novel about a girl who learns she's gotta marry a fae king to restore balance in the fae world. I gotta iron out the plot from this one as it came out of a failed collaboration that I think needs an overhaul.

Continued work on my screenplay. I love the story and the characters and I truly believe in it and that I can do this, but I get scared of it sometimes.

It's overwhelming and exciting to know that it's my story and I can do just about anything I want with it. Most importantly, I need to get this finished because if I don't take it as far as I can go, I will be quite disappointed in myself (that and I have other original stories I want to write).
