What do think is the best medium for horror?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-20 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm stuck between video games because of the immersion aspect or books because of the let your mind fill in the blanks aspect.

What are your guys thoughts?

podcasts and audiobooks. it has the mind-filling-the-blanks aspect of books, and, if the actor is good, a creepy, hypnotizing voice giving life to the words.

video games for me. i can barely play anything horror related. but movies or books never scare me. in fact outside video games i tend to find most horror things annoying or silly.

Personally, I think video games. If a book starts getting under my skin, I can put it down until I'm ready to keep reading. With a video game, though, I feel obligated to keep going until I find a save point or collect that one item I need, or whatever, and it makes me keep playing beyond the point I'd normally be freaked out enough to take a break. (On the other hand, however, crap gameplay can replace fear with frustration really quickly, which is something other mediums don't really have to worry about.)

Video games, but they have to be done right (read: not ape Amnesia like all the horror games are doing these days.)

It's the multimedia experience -- sound, visuals, and direct personal interaction (via controller/mouse and keyboard.)

I lean towards books, because of one advantage and one limitation.

The advantage: description is exactly as much as the writer wants it to be. You don't have to shadow your monster's form, you can simply not describe it until you want to reveal it. This allows for all sorts of tricks with perspective.

The limitation: no jump scares. This forces authors to get more creative with how they scare people. (Let's face it, jump scares are barely even horror--they're the artistic equivalent of popping a balloon next to someone's ear.)

The interactive aspect of games actually diminishes the horror effect for me. Movies get to me the most.

Definitely video games. It's hard to get into the atmosphere of the story when you're watching an unsympathetic protagonist make obviously genre unsavvy choices. All that changes when you are the protagonist.

Movies don't scare me but books sure have.

For me personally, video games or movies. I cannot handle either because they scare me so much. Books I can handle no matter what the imagery or contents. And podfics/audio is just boring to me for the most part.

I'm inclined to agree with video games and audio books.

I think comics and animation are probably the worst.

Depends on what you think the criteria are. If "the best kind of horror" is the one that scares the most, then it's films for me. I literally cannot make myself look at some screencaps (...pls never talk to me about The Shining).

If it's the one that's most aesthetically appealing and atmospheric, I have to agree with rubbertea. Audiobooks. Always. There is something about sound imagery that just works for the purpose of creating great horror.

Books don't scare me at all (e.g. I've read The Shining and was left indifferent); and neither do they hold a powerful aesthetical appeal. Mostly, they make me queasy.

[although I must say it wasn't always like this. When I was thirteen I was forced to throw away all my Edgar Poe books because I read them and was scared so much I couldn't look at the covers.]

Video games for sure. I think it has something to do with the fact that not only am I immersed in the atmosphere and projected onto the character, but I feel a certain amount of 'responsibility' for what happens to said character.

And I'm not sure exactly how to put it so it'll make sense, so I'll give an example: Jasper's death the first time through Wish House in Silent Hill 4. (I know that game gets a lot of flack, but the atmosphere worked for me.) I remember coming down a staircase and suddenly hearing him screaming, and seeing the cracked-open door with smoke faintly billowing out of it, and I was petrified. It was the fact that I had to go to that door that scared me so much, if that makes sense? That moment before seeing something terrible that I had to see, that I had to force Henry to see. I swear my blood ran cold.

Perhaps it's a stretch for a medium, but I think walk-in haunted fun houses that pop up around the best potential as medium. But most them end up being predictable, unfortunately.

Depends. I scare easily so most formats work for me on at least some levels. I'll probably plump for books & movies in the end, though. I remembering actually flinging a book away from me once (the scene was sort of like the show scene from Psycho but with a much tighter immersion because it was 1st person POV and the author had done a really good job ramping tension), and movies scare me ridiculously often.

Video games are a complicated example for me. I don't play them much, so I've only felt the effect a couple of times, but they actually tend to irrationally anger me more than scare me. That's because my fight-or-flight responses tend to trend towards fight, and when I feel responsible for the character I'm playing I find myself instinctively trying to physically fight for them and then being helplessly angered when I can't, because they're on the other side of a screen. I was actually forbidden from playing the Wii because I almost put the controller through the screen during a game while trying to actually and physically fight the enemy I was facing. When the immersion is that deep, it doesn't scare me the way books or movies do, it triggers my actual fight-or-flight responses instead, and then I get angry when they've nowhere to go.

For me either books or movies, some video games managed it but a lot of the time I'm able to detach myself and it doesn't really affect me.

Video games, short stories, manga.

Games. Movies I mostly get frustrated cause I'm like "DON'T GO IN THERE YOU FUCKING MORON!!" But when I'm the character, I'm like "...I have to go in there, dont' I. You're going to make me go in there? I don't want to. Whyyyyyyyy" and then I do and it's terrible and I'm scared.

That Outlast game scared the shit out of me. The hiding mechanic, whimpering in cabinets and under beds as monsters searched for me, the freaky-ass mobs, holy shit those articulate two psychopaths that you have to jump out a window to escape...and then with my FINGERS motherfucker!! NUH UH!!!

Video games and manga. I'm a complete horror wuss, but I can manage to get through most movies and books okay, yet I can barely deal with a Let's Play of horror games without just wanting to burst into tears. Don't even get me started on manga.

Movies, cause in video games I tend to go hunker down and hide, but in movies the dumb shits just keep making it worse for themselves or I just don't have the degree of autonomy so all I can do is watch.

Personally, I don't feel like video games are that immersive. Technically, I suppose I'm playing a more active role in the story, but I'm always very aware that I'm playing a video game, because...I have to actually play it.

With books and movies I can just get lost in it, and I'm not quite sure which one wins for me. Definitely a well-done either beats a mediocre other, but when when both are well-done or mediocre...it's a little more of a draw.

Games, easily. Horror versions of anything else don't scare me and haven't since I was a kid. I lack imagination, I guess. I have to be immersed, not watching some other (often painfully stupid) person go through something. I have to be the one going through it, or it's not scary. Maybe my adrenal glands are broken but that's the way it is for me.
