lol I love how low the standards are in this thread

My thoughts exactly. Just because there are worse characters in the series doesn't make Tyrion somehow better. He may not exactly be as monstrous as other characters, but he's still in the morally grey area. More so in the books.

Um, if there are worse characters then it actually does make him better... than those characters. That's what 'worse' means.

I agree with this but I'm still laughing at all the "well he hasn't raped anyone or had infants murdered"

I feel that way all the time as a fan of the series; sometimes you just got to look back and LOL at the people that pass for 'good' in this fandom. Well, I'm a fan of some actually good characters as well but admittedly I think they tend to be more boring than the grey ones.

There's a very low bar in Game of Thrones.

A bunch of dicks playing musical chairs.

I guess I worded that badly. My bad, I'd try to explain what I mean exactly but I'm having trouble putting my thoughts to words.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
You meant to say 'it doesn't make him good'... and I agree. I don't think he's a wholly good person, but there is good in him, which is more than can be said for a host of other people in the series.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that works better. Thanks and I will agree with that as well. I'm just kinda sick of people ignoring or brushing aside his faults.

I think it's pretty stupid to apply modern morality to a series set in the past, be it real or fantastical.

Sure, Tyrion is a pretty bad person by our standards. But by the standards of Planetos? Damn, he's practically a saint. He doesn't rape, he doesn't murder willy-nilly, he doesn't order unnecessary deaths of people just because he can. Compared to the other examples of his social class in Westeros and Essos, Tyrion is a good person.

I'm pretty sure there were plenty of people in Westeros who consider rape and murder immoral. I mean, I like Tyrion and I will agree with the people saying that he is a better person than a lot of the other characters in the series, but he doesn't get a pass through moral relativity.

By the past society that these books are based off of, rape and infanticide were wrong. You could get locked up in medieval europe for raping or murdering someone.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you were powerful enough to dodge the charges, or make them disappear.

Which is pretty much how it is in the books - you see commoners who are punished for the same transgressions committed by the upper class, but the aristocracy have a lot more leeway because they can exert their power to take it.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
That's still pretty much the case in modern societies, and societies in every era. I thought we were talking morality here, not those who can get away with breaking it if they have enough money and power.

AIRT was the one who brought up people being locked up for rape and murder. I was responding to that.

And realistically, law, power, and morality are not easily divisible concepts, particularly when you're discussing the latter within a specific societal context.
