No more good than other characters? I mean... that depends on which characters we're talking about? Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with his stans but there are many objectively worse people in that series.

Except by most moral standards he actually is? All the characters better then him have pretty much already died.

And he's the best lanister by far. Notice how he's yet to rape anybody or cause the death of somebody who wasn't actively trying to fuck him over?

(Anonymous) 2014-04-21 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
He hasn't raped anyone in the show yet. He will eventually if they true to his character arc in the books but who knows.

Wasn't Tyrion forced to rape his wife Tysha way back when? I mean, unless they changed that in the show or I have my characters confused or something.

Jaime (canon Jaime, not that show abomination) never rapes anybody. He actually tries to help a rape victim. Meanwhile, Tyrion has explicitly said he wants to rape and murder Cersei.

everyone in Game of Thrones does morally repugnant shit, or dies, or both. the nature of the world and the series is that people are forced to do morally wrong things. tyrion does morally wrong things; he is also probably one of the better people in the series from a moral point of view.

and, you know, he's also an incredibly funny, smart, sarcastic asshole who is also obviously capable of empathy. no i have no idea why fandom would like him

"everyone" Yeah, except well, except Sansa and Shireen. Then again, they're both virtual prisoners (to some degree) with limited agency.

Tyrion's scenes are one of the few things I look forward to.

My thoughts exactly. Just because there are worse characters in the series doesn't make Tyrion somehow better. He may not exactly be as monstrous as other characters, but he's still in the morally grey area. More so in the books.

I think it's pretty stupid to apply modern morality to a series set in the past, be it real or fantastical.

Sure, Tyrion is a pretty bad person by our standards. But by the standards of Planetos? Damn, he's practically a saint. He doesn't rape, he doesn't murder willy-nilly, he doesn't order unnecessary deaths of people just because he can. Compared to the other examples of his social class in Westeros and Essos, Tyrion is a good person.

You can like a character even if you accept that they aren't the nicest people on earth. Anyway Tyrion is pretty good, by the standards set by the people around him, but he is not a nice man. He is a clever man who does what he has to do to get ahead in life.

Tyrion and Bronn are pretty much the only two characters I connected to, and Arya because she used a bow in the first episode and that automatically makes me like a person, her being badass made me like her even more...

Tyrion has his problems, but IMO he does look kinda clean when compared to the rest of the Westerosi noble families (Looking at you, Greyjoys and Bolton). Peter Dinklage's acting does help too.

And before you ask, yes I also realize that he did morally wrong things and there's no excuse for that. It's just that in a shitty world, he's kinda the only link to sanity (or what seems like it) and logic that we have (barring Sansa, Margarey and arguably Varys).

I hate how the entire fandom elevates the guy as being "the only decent person" in the series when, if you read the books, he's quite an asshole and it's annoying how the show has gone out of its way to make Tyrion completely flawless. I mean, what he does to Shae in the books is pretty appalling considering it's his own fault for projecting so hard onto an 18 year old prostitute. Then he goes on to mope about himself, rape a prostitute, and claim that he wants to rape his own sister in ADWD. I doubt we'll see any of that on the actual show. No doubt they'll probably twist it so that Tywin murders Shae because MUH BLACK AND WHITE HERO OF THE SERIES.

First of all, in the real world you don't love people because they're 'good', you love them because you love them...

Secondly, it seems to me that fandom strives to make all characters conform to some abstract standard of perfection (either by re-writing them itself or by trying to persuade writers to change them in canon)* but, in a story, each character is part of an ensemble, and it's the interactions between characters that provide the reader/viewer with vicarious experience. It's not the writer's job to make all characters 'good', it's the reader/viewer's job to examine the evidence and form their own conclusions.

*It does the same with plots.

Thirdly, it's my conclusion that Tyrion isn't a 'bad person', he's just a 'person' who sometimes does bad things -- losing it, for example, when he's betrayed by his beloved brother, the woman he genuinely loves (admittedly as an avatar of his wife, whom he genuinely loved) and his father, in quick succession -- but who can also be humane and kind.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the whole point of these books/this TV series is that no one is completely good or completely bad, just shades of grey? So, um, yeah, he's maybe done some bad things (though I honestly do not remember one horrible thing he's done?), but compared to the other 'grey' characters, he's positively a good guy. At least, he seems genuinely appalled at some of the things his family's done. Can't say the same for the rest of them.

He's definitely not a very good person, but he's still better than a lot of the other characters, morally speaking. As a lot of people have said, that doesn't excuse the bad/cruel things he does, but if we're specifically addressing his morality vs. the morality of other characters, he's one of the least evil characters in the show. Which... really speaks more to the world than Tyrion himself. (Disclaimer: only watched the show, don't know about anything he does in the books.)

I never really liked Tyrion in the books either. I like Dinklage's Tyrion, but I always saw the self-indulgent, self-centered sad sack beneath the veneer of humor. My friends never believed me, then ADWD came out and booooy did they ever eat some crow.
