Are you kidding me? Sansa is a lot more interesting in the books, she's one of my favorite characters. In the show, not so much.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
This. I enjoyed her POV chapters. Arya's, not so much, until the latest book from when she's with the Hound onwards.

I actually read the books after watching the show and I think I prefer them. The show is great, but daaaaaamn the POV chapters really add an extra layer of thought and dimension.

Yeah, same. I find her petulant and irritating in the show, but I really enjoy her book chapters. They're two completely separate characters to me.

>saying that you enjoy the adaptation more than the original? Heresy!

Nope.

>saying that you won't read the original because you think it's bound to be worse than the adaptation? Stupidity!

Yeah.

+1. At least give it a try, OP

Yeah I think anyone claiming that the adaptation is an improvement over the books has a shakier perch after last week.

I haven't read the books, so that makes me a heretic by default. I am strangely proud of this.

But how do you know that she's not even better in the books if you haven't read them??

But because Sansa's chapters in the books are so internalized, you get to know all her thoughts and fears and desires, and you get a much fuller view of her as a character. Sophie does a great job with what she's given, but we don't get to see nearly any of what's going on below the surface with her. When that's the way the majority of her book storyline is told, it's frustrating to not be getting that.

Sansa's fantastic in the books.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Sansa's pretty awesome in the books. You get to know her WAY more than on the show, because she's a POV character with all her thoughts laid out for you.

Also, I don't think anyone should feel bad about not wanting to read/watch the original of something when they like an adaptation, but it is super silly to say that the person who created a character can't 'do them justice'.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Sansa's great in the books. Several of the characters are far better in the books than in the show. Jaime is another.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-22 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Her POVs get good only after Joffrey's death.

lolwut? If anything, the show makes Sansa more airheaded, passive, and non-existent. They turned the entire "marrying Tyrion" ordeal into being about Tyrion's pain rather than about the suffering Sansa goes through, among other things.

If you're a Sansa stan, then do yourself a favor and read the books. She's better there.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
But...but Sansa's more in-depth in the books...I mean, she's great in the show and I love her, but I'm not sure I'd love her *as much* without the internal insight the books had...

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Sansa's actually the only reason I keep reading the books. I find her fascinating, and I think the way all of the things that are happening to her develop her character makes her character arc less senselessly violent than some of the others.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. It would be difficult to convey how utterly boring and stupid she is in text. It comes across so much better through Sophie's dead, expressionless face.

She's great in the books and you get more into her head

I saw the show first before I picked up the first and second books. I just picture Sophie Turner when I read Sansa's chapters. *shrugs*

Give the books a try, maybe you'll be really disappointed, and that's that, or maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised and find them equally as good or better than the show.

I think Sophie is amazing as Sansa, but they barely give her enough scenes to work with. You get way into her head into the books. She's pretty much my favorite character in the entire series.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
You might not like her as much. This is true. Sansa is my favorite character, show and book (although I love Margaery in the show almost as much). But in the books, you're subjected to her 11-year-old girl mind, and all that entails. She's a kinder, better person in the show than in the books--while she's leagues better than almost anyone else, in the book, you see a lot more narcissism, bigotry, and blatant 11-year-old foolishness. This is not a criticism. But it might be a shock to you, and you might be offended that a character has been 'given' flaws.

the books are the reason Sansa is my favorite character in the whole series. you learn so much about her that you're not able to see in the show. Sophie Turner is beautiful and she does a great job as Sansa, but since you can't do POV in the show, you miss a lot of the subtleties and her motivations for thinking and acting the way she does.

I can understand being worried, but at least give her chapters a try. she's really amazing.

(Anonymous) 2014-04-23 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
bro, Sansa is SO much better in the books

(so's Catelyn, incidentally. and Cersei. other than Arya and Brienne who it does just fine, and Margaery, who the show buffed up a lot, the show actually kind of fails at making its female characters as complex and awesome as they're written to be)
