I'm sad to hear that scans_daily has apparently become so...unfun. I remember enjoying it quite a lot when it was on lj and it was actually what introduced me to comics in the first place, which is something I'll always be thankful for.

So make your own community. A lot of the criticism scans_daily gets is perfectly fair, but it's getting pretty tiring. Stop lamenting and do something constructive.

The thing about SJ, so far as I know, is that it is intended to make places safe for everyone. But places where it exists are so intolerant and nasty to anyone who missteps that they've become safe only for SJWs. Who are dicks in a dick measuring contest.

For the most part, I'm too scared to say anything on that site, because I like the pictures, but not the holier than thou, we can never be happy about getting nice things like gay characters, death to those who oppose us attitude.

Yeah, I left SD of my own accord. It's gotten to the point where you can't make legitimate complaints about badly-written female characters without someone crying 'misogyny' and turning the thread into a wank fest spurred on by the mods.

The Gail Simone thing is sad.

But I've criticised female characters plenty of times at s_d without getting jumped on by mods and other users, so I don't know where the people in this thread are getting the whole "can't say a bad word about women" thing from. I hold female characters to the same standard I hold male characters, and if I'm unhappy with something I explain why I find it out-of-character, or poorly written, or why it makes the character seem unpleasant to me. I've never felt the need to wish death on a character, no matter how much some of their actions may leave a bad taste in my mouth. Like I said, I've never been attacked or chastised for my opinions, although I have gotten into some interesting debates.

SO MUCH YES. Even if I found them a tad oversensitive, I totally respected their right to decide to have a comm where there are strict rules about language some people find sexist or homophobic. Comics fandom is disgustingly misogynistic, and if comic book fans, especially female ones, want a safe space, they are more than entitled to it. In fact, I gleefully welcome it.

But in my opinion? Their ridiculous views about how you're allowed to talk about female characters IS disgustingly misogynistic. They behave like female characters cannot be treated the same as male characters, because they are sooooooo fragile and weak and delicate that if you make a joke about violence or death that would be PERFECTLY fine with a male character, you will completely traumatize all female users and utterly demolish the female character in question because she is obviously a worthless piece of fluff with no value as a character and who cannot survive a single joke. And when she's a widely-hated character, is she judged on her worth as a character? Nooooooo! She's judged on her gender. You can't insult a female character. No matter what a jackass she is, no matter what an annoying, worthless, boring character she is, no matter if you'd be ripping her to pieces and making hilarious hate-memes about her if she was male. Of course not! A woman should be judged only on her gender, not her personality, amirite?

But it's perfectly fine to have long conversations and cracky hypotheticals about how you'd like to castrate and sodomize a male character for being a bit irritating. Yeah, that's perfectly fine. (I've literally seen conversations exactly like this there).

If you don't like the way s_d is run, or you were kicked out/you flounced/whatever, that's cool--it's not perfect, and it never was. But it's not the only comics forum on Earth, and it is not a lifeboat leaving the fucking Titanic.

You will totally live to complain about supporting Spider-Man characters again! You can even talk to Gail Simone and Warren Ellis on Twitter, Tumblr, LJ, etc.

The amount of entitlement people feel towards scans_daily is bizarre.
