This is fantastic. I really want to see a character with an oyster patronus.

Me too. There should be fic.

Now I want to see fic of what different wizards/witches with different Patronuses are like. Patronuses are supposed to represent a big part of who you are, right? I wonder what someone with an oyster Patronus is like? What about a shrimp Patronus? Sea anemone Patronus?

It is probably Archie from the Quidditch World Cup Camp. Seems like it would be in character from Archie the Gender Rebel Wizard.

Awwww! Thanks for the giggle, OP. :)

Wait. You were a long time thinking that otters were oysters, or were you just misinterpreting this example?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-04-30 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought they meant they misread it. or mis-brained it, whichever. not that they thought the animal that is an otter is actually an oyster. though it's also possible they simply hadn't heard of otters before. *shrug*
mautradutor: (Default)

[personal profile] mautradutor 2014-04-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, I think I expressed myself badly. I wanted to speak of the word more than the actual animal.

Although you're right, there are probably places where otters are less known!

mis-brained, such a nice verb. Yes, that's exactly what happened!

Oh my god, this is gold. I laughed so hard I nearly teared up.

I just imagined how an oyster patronus would work. It would probably fly like a frisbee, with a kind of buzzing sound, and pinch people's noses. Or smack them under the knees.

I keep imagining the oyster patronus would just sit there and hope that the dementor would try to eat it.

[personal profile] dreemyweird 2014-04-30 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Its plan is that if a dementor accidentally uses something other than an oyster fork, the realization that it has breached etiquette will cause it to die from embarrassment.

How about an AU where a guy with an oyster patronus is a spoiled kid from a super rich family? He always tries to make himself useful and always fails because he has no idea how. And his patronus is like the ultimate expression of his lack of life-hacking skills. His character development results in his acquiring a more practical patronus.

this description is fantastic.

I would like to order a dozen raw oyster patronuses on ice with wedges of lemon, then. :)

Let's make it two, nonny. Beer's on me.

I don't know the difference between clams and oysters, but one of them bit my mother on the toe when she was a kid. She was on the beach and stepped on it accidentally, and apparently it took a good piece out of her toe.

So they could be dangerous...ish.

AIUI Clams are the ones with bulbous shells, oysters are kind of flat and misshapen shells, and scallops have super thin, fan-shapped, shells.

They all look like chunks of phlegm inside the shell though.

And they are all pretty tasty, but scallops taste the best out of all of them.

This is an awesome secret. Now I'm wondering about other unusual Patronuses (Patroni?). Are they all cool animals, or do some people have frogs and beetles and stuff? Can you have aquatic Patronuses? Is there a size limit, or could someone have a whale or a giraffe or an elephant? If so, would those take more energy to conjure? I have so many questions.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Can they be like daemons?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-01 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
People generally produces patronuses of animals seen in their native country, but that is not a certainty.

People have been known to conjure Patronuses of Mammoths and Giants, but examples of this size are rare.

Most patronuses are common animals. Dogs, cats and horses are among the most common examples, with magical creatures being amongst the rarest. The inbetween covers things like foxes, otters, deer, etc. Prehistoric animals, as mentioned above with the mammoth, are possible also, but very uncommon. They are heavily based on the individual, so it's more than possible for twins to produce very different patronuses.

Owls are surprisingly uncommon, considering their closeness with wizardkind.

Larger patronuses do not appear to take more energy to conjure, nor are they necessarily more powerful. An example given is that a lowly mouse Patronus was capable of holding off an army of dementors single handedly.

You can find detailed information on Patronuses on Chapter 12, Book 3 on Pottermore. It answers many of your questions ... but not as to whether aquatic ones are possible, which I hope, 'cos I'd want mine to be an octopus. :c
