You know, I agree with you. That whole point. Makes sense. I get it. I'm the same. La-di-da. However, your S!B makes me feel like you have no idea why people make fun of those things. At all. You are far, far too literal with them. Which... makes me laugh and slightly curious about you.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that last bit right there.

I was confused by this -- is there a stereotype that all atheists are reddit-neckbeards? I wouldn't even assume that anybody who had this objection to fic was atheist, just that they don't like OOC writing.

In some quaters, yes.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
No, there is not a stereotype that ALL atheists are reddit-neckbeards. There is a certain stereotypical figure of a certain kind of atheist, who holds certain views (broadly, that religion is provably false and solely harmful, that science has proven religion wrong or supplanted it, that people who believe in religion are either morally wrong or idiots who ought to be looked down upon, that it is morally right to attack religion at all opportunities, etc), and who has certain traits ascribed to them - badly dressed, wears fedora, posts on reddit, is an engineer, etc etc. And so someone who advances those (quite stupid) views is often mocked by comparing them to this stereotypical figure. But it's not a stereotype of all atheists at all and many of those doing the mocking are themselves atheists (myself included). It's mocking smug superior dickheads.

Well, it's more like there is a stereotype that all stupid atheists are "reddit-neckbeards". I dunno what the stereotype for smart ones is. Maybe people who spend a lot of times in museums. Just because.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
On F!S, "reddit-neckbeards" get brought up whenever anyone says anything vaguely atheist.

It's funny, because I would have assumed fundamentalists would be neckbeards. So weird.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Fundies on either side are neckbeards. jsyk

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
People make fun of those things because they get to do the South Park thing of faux smug superiority by pretending to be above it all, and body shaming.

Remember if a man makes fun of a woman for being fat and dressing badly that's not acceptable, if you make fun of a man for being fat and dressing badly that's okay because they must be nice guys.
forgottenjester: (Default)

[personal profile] forgottenjester 2014-05-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
When did we start talking about fat people? The secret doesn't mention them.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Remember that "misandry" is a made up term touted by men who don't like being called on their crap.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
As long as "feminists" echo that word and buy products with that word printed all over them I refuse to believe that it's a "only butthurt men use it" thing. You don't discredit a word by giving it attention or even spend money on it.
But that's probably lost on someone filled up with tumblr logic - they also think that linking to official videos of artists they don't like is a good idea when all that does is giving them even more clicks/views.

True, though it's been co-opted and use unironically by radfems.

Hasn't the word misandry been around longer than the word feminism? It's not like it's new thing.

NAYRT

(Anonymous) 2014-05-04 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I'm confused, I didn't see Anon use "misandry" anywhere. You don't have to believe men are an oppressed minority to think that "Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you" is good advice (whether you're religious or not,) or that hypocrisy sucks.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You seem irrationally angry at a lot of things but especially South Park.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
And here I always had the impression that on South Park, just about everyone and everything is fair game for mockery.

the s!b was puzzling to me too. I thought atheism was popular in fandom.

I thought so too...

(Anonymous) 2014-05-03 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Until a couple of years ago it was. Now the fashion is for preaching. I'm guessing all the kids of the 90s hippies are starting to come online in their own right and are rebelling against their permissive parents by being hardline little jerks.

The social justice side (or whatever your favoruite descriptor for that part of fandom is) hate it. It represents so many things they disagree with, and given their rise in prominence and the degree to which they make their complaints heard, the balance has certainly shifted in the last five to ten years.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2014-05-03 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
The social justice side also seems to dislike religion, so that's weird.
