[Star Trek: The Next Generation/Reginald Barclay]

Man, everyone I know that watched the show wanted to punch him in the face. That's what he was there for. To take some of the face-punching desire off of Wes.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
That's weird, I always wanted to punch Riker in the face. (Wes, too, though.)

No. Everyone I know thinks he's completely adorable.

I think he was adorable too, but only later on. He was very punchable in his first episode.

I just wanted to be Wesley's eight year old girl friend. I was a little young for him, sure, but I knew when to reverse the polarity of the shield array even then. And I just emit tachyons naturally.

*dreamy Wesley Crusher sigh*

I didn't want to punch him, he just made me really uncomfortable because that's exactly how I would be in the same situation. (Including the trouble with the holodeck.)

Aw a Reg secret! I found him cringey but rather relatable in many ways. The whole holodeck episode rubbed me the wrong way though.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Eh, I knew for years it probably could be abused in that way. I'm just surprised TNG (in the 80s) had the balls to address it. Albeit in a PG kind of way.

I agree. His creating a Deanna hologram because she wasn't interested/he couldn't work up his courage to ask her out was creepy. I appreciated that DS9 explored the creepiness inherent in the holo technology. Next Gen, on the other hand, played it off for laughs or as harmless.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-15 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That was...his very first episode though? It was supposed to be wrong and creepy and the whole point of the episode was him *realizing that* and getting over it. I'm not really certain what you're talking about. You do understand this thing called character development, correct?

Also, uh, no shit TNG played it for laughs. It was the show that came up with the holodeck in the first place. Deconstructions of sci-fi tropes always take at least a few years to kick in -- back in the '80s, the whole concept was a lot newer and unexamined.

I have very conflicting feelings regarding him. I was always happy for him when he made progress, but I also often felt the same as you, OP.

I also wondered why apparently no one had approached him about working through his anxiety prior to his assignment to the Enterprise. It was so crippling that it was hard to believe he had gotten so far without treatment. Really, he was a vehicle for tackling an issue, and it was rather transparent.

I'm sorry about how you have no soul, OP.

(joking joking, but still. Really? Reg? Broccoli? I mean, okay, he was sort of punchable in Hollow Pursuits, but then he got better and was super cute and awesome.)

I liked him as a person, I was just genuinely baffled they'd let him into StarFleet, which still required at least some training. I think he had genuine anxiety issues, you'd think they'd screen officers for that.

I always thought I would be like Reg if I joined Starfleet. The anxiety, the social awkwardness, the holodeck addiction... I'm honest enough to admit that's totally why I always wanted to punch him in the face.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I can't hit him for fear that B.A Baracus will come crashing through my door demanding to know what I did to his 'little buddy.' ;-)

What bothered me about Barclay was that his introduction made the Enterprise's officers look like a bunch of clueless assholes. How is this crew in charge of interacting with alien species if they can't even deal with HUMAN differences in personality?

(Anonymous) 2014-05-16 07:47 am (UTC)(link)
One of the very few things I disliked about First Contact was the writers were very obviously using him to mock us fans.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, sometimes. Not half as much as I wanted to punch the others on his behalf, though. Wesley's dopey 'Broccoli' nickname, Geordi's suddenly inability to understand what it's like for someone to not know how to deal with women/anxiety, Picard coming off like a dithering idiot repeating Brocolli and Riker's not even trying to work with him.

The only ones that came off well were the ladies and Data. Troi was super professional about being creeped on, Crusher was great at bringing him out. And Data was like 'why are you being jerks?'.
