I love Spider-Man, I read the comics and the novels, I've seen all the various cartoon versions, and I've watched all the movies. ASM2 is the weakest movie of the five. It had all sorts of pacing issues. Gwen died needlessly. (On one hand, she had to die because comics, on the other hand, they made such a mess of other important stuff that they could have gotten around it.) ASM2 Peter is less likeable than pretty much every other version of Peter ever. Also, Harry was too weirdly slimy to be a fandom darling -- and fandom has terrible tastes, so that's pretty impressive.

There were positives about the movie, especially for fans willing to project what they knew about Peter from other canons onto this less fleshed out Peter, but overall the Spider-Man fandom has plenty of more appealing versions of their hero to enjoy, and so you'll find them settled happily in existing corners of fandom, reading, writing, and making art about other versions of these characters.

SPOILER WARNING PLEASE? Not everyone's read the comics series it was based off. God. Did not want to know that.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
That storyline has been around for over forty years. If you haven't read it or googled it then you have no one to blame except for yourself. No one should have to tiptoe when discussing something that has been out for the public consumption for DECADES.

It's not a fucking canon-per-canon adaptation. It's not Lord of the Rings. Things happen differently, the characters are alternate versions.

So yes, it was spoilers, you cactus-fucking fanbrat. I'm sorry your underwear is in a bunch because it's not your perfect fucking comics, but it's still fucking spoilers because movie fans =/= comics fans.

Who says anything about me being upset that it wasn't like the comics. I am not the original poster. I am a different anon. I am saying that I am tired of hearing people like you whining about being spoiled by things that have been out longer than you have been in existence. Again, no one should have to tip toe about discussing things that have been available to the public for decades. And if you don't want to read the comic, fine. That is your choice. But it is not fair to make people who have shut up about it like the storyline came out last week.

DA

But it isn't fair to movie fans because they want to watch the movie without reading the comics. It isn't hard to just write SPOILER at the top of your comment.

Ironically that "spoiler" is what got all my friends and coworkers to see the film, they love Emma Stone and were blown away that the film took it there.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-05-19 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
The 'spoiler' is actually everything I knew about Gwen Stacey. I've never read a Spiderman comic in my life. Cultural osmosis via TV Tropes and other places.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I'm not sure there was enough swearing in that comment.

That "spoiler" is as long established and infamous as "Aeris dies". It's like the defining thing about Gwen Stacy. So no, it's not a spoiler. You should be directing all that rage towards yourself for living under a rock all this time.

So people who don't read comics and want to enjoy movies loosely based on them without being spoiled should forget about that because is their own fault for not knowing everything any comic fan knows.

Such a nice, warm and welcoming fandom.

Her death seems so much more than just a spoiler , it really shaped and changed comics history.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2014-05-19 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
Listen you shit huffer. IT WAS ALWAYS GOING TO BE THIS WAY. Gwen Stacy fucking dies. That's her thing. She's an amazing part of Peter Parker's life, then SHE DIES. It is the second most important defining moment of his life.

Uncle Ben dies, Gwen Stacy dies. That's basically every iteration of spider-man ever except the ones that make it a point to mention they are alternate universes. Movies, comics, cartoons, don't matter. Uncle Ben dies, Gwen Stacy dies.

Just because you've managed to miss something most people find out by cultural osmosis doesn't mean the rest of us have to tip toe around your stunning ignorance.

As someone who didn't even know Gwen existence before ASM and who was spoiled of her death in the cinema 5 minutes before ASM2 started, fuck you all.

I don't even know why I brother watching any of these movies anymore, since you all "superior" old time fans enjoy being killjoys more than anything else.
And cultural osmosis my ass, believe it or no, there's more entrainment culture out there and not everyone has been obsessed/has friends obsessed with superheroes.

you people make me laugh

they're fucking COMIC BOOKS. not everyone reads comics! not everyone has read them or visited the wikipedia page! so, yes, there are a LOT of people who will have no idea that gwen stacy dies!

jesus christ, you fucking morons invest so much of your own self-worth in the fact that you can remember details from a work of fiction.

GOOD JOB, WOULD YOU LIKE A GOLD STAR.

I know Gwen Stacy eventually dies. I did not know it was in this movie. I do not personally care, but I know people who will. So yes, SPOILERS, for this movie.

Less likable than the last Spider-man movie Spider-man. Uh-huh.

Sure.

Keep fapping to him.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
you really have a weird idea of what fleshed out means if you think asm spider-man is less fleshed out than sm movie trilogy peter

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

But he is. At least with Raimi's Spider-Man there was the whole class struggle part. One of the biggest things about Spider-Man was and is his lower middle class roots. Peter and his Aunt struggling to make ends meet. Peter living in a tiny, tiny room/flat because that's all he can afford. I didn't see any of that in this reboot.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)

I thought it was telling when Aunt May told Peter that she's taking night classes to become a nurse and that she can't do it without Uncle Ben. It was really moving.

I think what people liked more about Andrew Garfield is that he has fun as Spider-Man. With all the shit Peter Parker is given in life, he has super human abilities that he uses to save people with, and he enjoys that. On the flip side though, he still struggles with feeling responsible for Gwen's dad's death, and also wanting to protect Gwen by letting her live her life but also wanting to be with her. Ultimately, he decides he wants to be with Gwen, but what happens? He's unable to save her and she dies.
I think Garfield did a good job with both ends, but the film does have an issue with the tone it wanted to carry. Sometimes I felt it was too light for having such serious scenes, and vise versa.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. Something I really liked about the second movie was Andrew Garfield's performance and how he interacted with the other characters. I thought he did the quips, his enjoyment about being Spider-Man, and how he interacted with the civilians. And his scenes with both Aunt May and Gwen Stacy were all really good; I especially liked the one scene where Aunt May was talking to him about his Dad, that was very moving.

It wasn't a perfect movie, and I agree with several of the criticisms of it, but I still really enjoyed it.

Andrew Garfield is a good spider man. Much better then Toby's Spider-man.

But he isn't in a good enough movie for that to matter.

(Anonymous) 2014-05-18 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)

So that negates all the other characterization? What the fuck? You are really pushing to conform a new canon with others.
