I have a feeling this thread is going to be full of people who don't feel like telling the difference between an excuse and an explanation.

I wish we had more context for where OP was coming from...that would help me to come up with a response other than "huh, interesting, wonder what other people have to say".

It's also interesting that you said that bit about excuses and explanations, since that's always been a really important distinction to me but other people seem to not care about it.

I've noticed that a lot of people seem to think they're the only sane man who realizes the truth, whether they think that everyone looks at excuses and treats them like legitimate explanations or that people take explanations and treat them like pathetic excuses. I'm no different. I know there are people who use their disorders as a way of excusing asshole behavior but I happen to think that most people are too quick to decide that someone is using an illness as an excuse when really they just want to explain. I've had so many bad experiences with that. I'm not even going to pretend to be at all unbiased here.

YANA. I've even resorted to adding, 'This is an explanation, not an excuse.' when talking about (other people's) behaviour, because some people. Just. Don't. Get. It.

Yes. I'm autistic, and this means sometimes I read things wrong, or literally when it wasn't meant that way. I have sometimes asked for clarification, explaining I'm autistic and I don't quite understand what was meant. I have had people tell me this is using my autism as an "excuse"... because I asked for clarification in order to properly respond. Sigh.
