OP Explains

(Anonymous) 2014-05-20 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought more people would be agreeing with me!! People usually think all one needs to be medieval are things like peasants, kings, and castles, which isn't true - all those things lasted in Europe long after its medieval period ended. The weaponry, clothing, and social-political structure in Attack on Titan does't resemble the medieval period very much. Medieval periods (Europe's lasted around 500-1400) are typically characterized by the feudal system, which involved knights and a state system that wasn't very centralized. In Attack on Titan we see that the King has strong centralized administrative power, and a large, well trained infantry army, that uses weapons such as flintlocks firearms- all things not really seen in medieval time settings.
Also, fashions, such as the cravat that Levi wears, didn't emerge in Europe until a good time after the Middle Ages were over.
I would say that Attack on Titan roughly resembles Europe as it did in the early 1800s.

OP Again

I'd like to add that I'm not trying to 'place' when Attack on Titan is taking place - it could be taking 2000 years in in the future from now, or on an entriely different planet for all I know. My main beef is people wrongly using the word 'medieval' to describe the Attack on Titan setting, when it really has nothing to do with the word at all.
Yeah, I'm the only person who cares about this shit, I know.

Eh, most people aren't actually disagreeing so much as going "Eh, it's hard to place." and moving on [or so it seems to me].

Also, you have to remember that while there are similarities between medieval structures, there are differences between regions [also, that most places don't actually recognize an era under the term "medieval" so much as "feudal"].

And...Attack on Titan really is just a mess in terms of what belongs when. A lot resembles the 1800's...except there are things that belong further back - in some cases actually in the Medieval time frame for Europe. For example, the sword in that picture? Probably a long-sword which was only really in use from the some point in the 1200's to the 1600's, and that includes early and late use. So it would have no business being anywhere in a story set in the 1800's, at least not being used as a serious weapon. It's also far from the only instance of that, as I'm sure you know.

tl;dr: People aren't exactly disagreeing so much as "Eh, it's a mess as far as technology and time period goes" because the author mixed a *lot* of time period stuff together. Probably either because they couldn't be bothered to do the research or went with Rule of Cool - if not both.

OP
The sword in the picture is long because it's designed to cut out a large portion of flesh of a Titan, not because it's copying any style of historical sword.
Again, I'm not saying that Attack on Titan is set in Europe the 1800s; I'd say it's clearly still a fantasy setting. But if you look at the clothes, government, and so forth of the show, it's just not all very "medieval".

I'm not arguing that - just pointing out that most people aren't really reacting strongly either way because it's a mess overall so there's no real point in worrying about when it's set anyways.

I don't think it's supposed to be "medieval" - it's a hodgepodge of "Western" styles based more on RPGs than actual history.

Re: OP Explains

I agree it's not medieval. I think people are just kind of stating that it's pointless to even try to pinpoint it to a time in our world, since things clearly developed differently in theirs.

OP
Darnit, everyone here misunderstood me. Oh well. My point was never that Attack on Titan should be matched up to a particular time period in European history. I don't even think the author tried to set it in a specific time period. It just bothers me when people say that it's set in a medieval setting, when it's clearly not. And because I'm a nerd who cares about that kind of thing, essentially.

I just call it 'pre-industrial'; even though they have complex technology like the 3DMG it's not interspersed into society enough to really apply.

If you thought more people would agree with you, then why was this a secret at all? Why not just, uh... express your opinion normally in non secret form?

But for the record, I agree.

OP
The secret is that I'm so easily bothered by it, which is dumb. Lol, it's not a secret that I think Attack on Titan isn't a medieval-fantasy show.
