Does anyone else only feel fat when they're trying to lose weight?
But I've noticed a pattern. Generally, I don't feel all that bad about being overweight - I hardly think of it, it's just "me", you know?
But the second I actually try losing weight I suddenly feel fat, and get irritated by all the imperfections. It's some weird psychological shit,I tell you.
Anyone else have the same phenomenon? Also tips to keep going are appreciated!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-22 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)I feel fat even when the scale says I'm in my normal level. I felt fat as I lost weight, I feel fat when I gain.
I don't know if I helped you out in any way.

HOWEVER. I think I might have some tips to keep going.
1) Set goals and reward yourself for them with "decadent" things. For example, when it comes to running, whenever I hit a distance goal, I get to have a beer (I keep beer drinking to a minimum because of its caloric content).
2) Vary your workouts. If you do the same thing every day, then a) you'll get bored and b) you'll plateau faster. Look up different routines and challenge yourself.
3) Aim for something other than weight loss. One of the things that keeps me going is the knowledge that I'm stronger than I once was. Think of something that you can't do or that's hard for you to do because you don't have the strength for it, and aim toward being able to do it. It's really motivating, and when you get to where you're able to do it, you feel so good, and it makes you want to get even stronger.
4) Try to exercise as early in the day as possible, even if that means getting up a little earlier. I know, that probably sounds counter-intuitive to the mission of "keep going," but we have more motivation early in the day, so it's easier to get into a workout. Also, it gives you an energy boost, and you start craving that boost.
Re: Does anyone else only feel fat when they're trying to lose weight?
2) Oh definitely. I'm easily bored. Though I'm fairly limited in what I can/am allowed to do physically. So mostly it's just walking/dancing currently.
3) That's a large pat of wanting to lose weight for me, but its less tangible and harder to measure, I guess. But I like the idea of being stronger.
4) I'm reaaally not a morning person, so I'll keep this on in the back of my mind, in case I start plateau-ing.
Thanks for the input!

But! I do feel better after working out, like I've accomplished something so I guess that keeps me going. I have changed when I do it though, it used to be in the morning after I got up but now I do it in the evening and it suits me so much better.
I'm trying not to miss a day however because I've done that before and I'll just slide back into not doing any exercise if I'm not careful.

I have not exercised since my daughter was born almost a year ago. Now that this terribly stressful semester is over, I am ready to start exercising again, and I started yesterday. Two days in a row, whoooooo!
Here's what I am going to do. I am going to swim every day if possible and also do some walking around the track while my daughter practices for cross country.
I am not going to do much with diet. I have found that once I get into the groove of exercising regularly that my diet tends to regulate itself at least in part. I go to sleep earlier because I'm tired and I don't feel like eating as much junk. I will continue to drink the massive amounts of water I drink every day. My one thing as far as diet goes is that I am going to only drink one baby coke each morning and No More!
I find that when I start trying to diet, it's like part of my brain goes wacko and I feel like I need to eat more or I'm being deprived and I think about it constantly. dieting is so counter productive for me. I am healthy already; my BP and stuff is great. I am focusing on being strong and powerful instead of thinking of it as losing weight. which also helps me not obsess.
Good luck to you!!

I used to not like to think about my weight. I knew I was way out of shape but I still didn't realize how much. It can be a bit of a shock.
I want to lose 25 more pounds and I'll be at my “ideal” weight. (For me, anyway. I'll be considered healthy then, and I already feel much better about myself, so that's all I want.) I find that thinking about all the cute clothes I'll be able to wear and the energy I'll have keeps me in check. I've never lost this much weight, and I've never been this dedicated, and tbh most of it is just how much better I feel since losing the weight. I got tired SO easily before, and while I might not be running any 5K marathons anytime soon, I feel like a different person. It's amazing how much more I can do now.
Maybe think of it like that? Not only will you be healthier, but the energy you'll have will be incredible.
As for tips, for me I get up early and excercise. As long as you excercise I don't think it matters when, but for me (And I'm not a morning person, tbh) I'm more likely to do it if I get it out of the way first thing in the morning. If I wait until the evening I lose motivation because I'm tired. Doing it in the morning actually makes me feel a bit more energized and gives me a nice sense of, “Hey, you accomplished something”. It's a good way to start off a day.
Other than that.. Drink lots of water, especially after working out, and then having a bottle of water an hour or so before meals makes it so you aren't as hungry. If you decide to calorie count it might be good if you plan ahead? Don't know if it would work with you, it doesn't with everyone, but for me I find it useful. I'll decide what to eat the next day before I go to bed so there's no scrambling to find something that fits my plan. It also takes the pressure off finding something to eat, and makes it less likely that you'll splurge on something you don't need. (Or, alternatively, that you CAN splurge on what you want, and not have to fret about it because you're still getting the amount of calories you want.)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 03:17 am (UTC)(link)No real tips to keep going except... keep going. I find the worst obstacles are to do with my own laziness and wanting to skip a day of exercise, etc. It snowballs and one day becomes two, then three, then I lose momentum and think fuck it, I can't do this, might as well quit and bake a cake. I started small re: exercise. 15 minutes a day, then half an hour. I also remind myself often of how far I've come and how I need to keep that ball rolling. Good luck! :)

(Anonymous) 2014-05-23 06:37 am (UTC)(link)I usually overcome it by not thinking about numbers on the scale or appearance so much, and just concentrating on making healthier choices, one choice at a time. And I remund myself that this isn't just for a few months, this is for forever so I can be healrhy for the rest of my life. And when you're thinking big like that bodily imperfections start seeming so much less important.
Good luck!
