Eye contacts help!

(Anonymous) 2014-05-31 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I recently started wearing contacts and think I failed. D: At work today, my left eye started hurting so badly, it was itchy and red. I endured it until I got home and took out the contact, but now my eye hurts so badly I can barely keep it open. I tried to rinse it out with water, but looking online (I know, bad idea)I worry I may have scratched my eye. Is that feasible? It's been over an hour and I still don't want to open it. I taped a tissue over it like an eyepatch so I could keep it closed more easily.

What should I do? :( Will it heal on its own if it is scratched?

Maybe you have trouble with your contacts and you're not tolerating them well enough, or something was on the contact/your hands and got into your eye. If it's hurting that badly without the contact I'd suggest checking in with your optician, just to make sure.

Yes, it's possible that you scratched or otherwise irritated your eye. If it's minor it may heal on its own, so just rest that eye for now and don't mess with it, but if it's not feeling any better by tomorrow then get thee to your eye doctor.

Get eye drops. The preservative free single use kind. Keep your contacts out for as long as it takes the eye to heal. Put drops in like 5-6 times a day to keep your eye good and lubricated and comfy.

If it's really bad go to the doctor because yes, you could have scratched your eye and would want to get that looked at. It should heal on it's own, but if possible it's always best to get the doc to take a look.

Tip for the future (if you continue with the contacts) always carry your glasses or a spare pair of contacts with you, and a contact case and solution - or put them at your desk at work or something. Because if your eyes are bothering you you should take the contacts out asap. Obvs that wasn't an option this time, but just in case for the future.

Oh you should not have endured it for hours. You should have use the cleaning solution as eye drops (provided your solution can be used for that - read the instructions). If that didn't help, you should have taken the contact out immediately and clean it with the solution, rinse your eye and put it back.

Anyway, now that it's irritated you should use real eye drops, keep the contact out and go to a doctor if that doesn't help. He'll give you more drops and/or a cream. Don't worry, getting irritated eyes is normal when things go in and you don't clean the lens.

Definitely check with your eye doctor just to be sure. But more likely you either put it in backwards or the contact was dirty or torn when you put it in, and it irritated your eye. Try putting a cool damp cloth over it and see if that helps (but again, see your eye doctor to make sure there's no infection or anything).

Other than how extreme it sounds, I'd say it's a scratch. Maybe it is, since your eyes are probably still really sensitive.

Generally it's a good idea to take your contact out of it starts hurting or itching randomly. Carry a contact case and mini-bottle of solution with you as well as your backup glasses. If you leave it in too long after it starts to irritate it's more likely that whatever particle that got in it will scratch your cornea.

However, a scratch isn't actually the end of the world. I've found that they heal on their own in a day or less.

ETA: you probably shouldn't put them in tomorrow, to let it heal. And if it doesn't feel better, get it checked out.

In the meantime, someone mentioned eye drops and if you don't have any those are always a good thing to have. I get false tears over-the-counter and keep them in the fridge. Putting cold eye drops into a dry or irritated eye is super soothing.

it's possible something like an eyelash got under your contact and because you didnt take the contact out, it rubbed between it and your eye until you got home. i would suggest some eyedrops to see if the lubrication helps.

in the future, i would also suggest taking your contact case with you as well as your lens solution, so if that happens again you can take your contact out immediately to check for ~foreign matter and then put it back in without it being dry or dirty from your hands.
