How do you exercise?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-03 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
What's good place start? Preferably stuff I can do indoors and without equipment.

How would you classify your fitness level? What are your aims? This is important.

I try and do these every hour http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUyMNyrOHJQ And I mix in squats and /proper/ push ups. Once a day I go running to and up these stairs where I do chin ups and practice kong vaults ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXH7FHfMCH0 ) and jumps, and then I will practice my jumps on some rocks nearby. Once every week or two I do parkour lessons and those are more intense.

How do you do chin ups on stairs?
I want to get into parkour, but I don't have good cardio. YET.

The hand rail of the stairs is free standing and tall enough for me to do chin ups if I lift my legs off the ground(my parkour teacher sometimes laments that I didn't grow to be just an INCH taller), and I can do this sorta inverse press-up (back straight, feet still on the ground) which is a lot easier.

I started doing my lessons when I was no stronger than the average person, 6 months later I can do some impressive things.

Is there anything you like? Yoga is easy to do inside and you don't need anything, except maybe a block and a mat. You can start simply at work your way up.

Pilates are pretty good and you can do them with just a yoga mat, and the exercises can be adjusted to your fitness level.

If you're a beginner you'll want to start low impact. For core muscles, Pilates and crunches are pretty decent, and calf raises and squats (add weights if these are too easy, the weights can be anything around the house that's heavy) for the lower body. For the upper body, I recommend pushups because you work so many muscles, and you can start at your own fitness level. If regular pushups are too difficult you can do them on your knees - if that's too difficult, do them standing up against the wall with increasing incline. If they're too easy, put your feet on a raised surface, or clap, or even try them one-handed. If you have something you can safely hang off of, try pullups or chinups, too. If you can't do them, do a negative one (start at the top and lower yourself as slowly as you can) until you build more strength, then start jumping up or kipping, then move on to a proper dead hang. If they're too easy, spread your grip or add weight.

Seconding yoga and pilates. There are plenty of tutorials on the Internet and you can switch to harder exercises, when your skills improve.

I've started with a 7 minute workout app that doesn't need anything but a wall and a chair.

While I have created a full training regimen for sprint/middle distance running (including strength training), I've found that plyometrics can be adapted for indoor use. The ones I complete most often come from the intermediate training program for the Grand Blue Mile (http://www.grandbluemile.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/GBM_TrainingSchedule_Intermediate.pdf), but there are certainly other options out there. For things such a karaoke drills, I've used a long hallway if the weather was too cold/wet to perform the drills outdoors. I also make sure to engage in dynamic stretching (some moves found here http://www.brianmac.co.uk/dynamic.htm), and that's very easy to do indoors with adequate space and a wall to steady yourself.

What I do is I get my pizzas topped so heavily, lifting it to my mouth counts as weight lifting.

I'd recommend looking for "bodyweight movement" exercise routines. A lot of them might involve pull ups, but generally anything else is doable with at most a chair. Yoga is another good one that doesn't really involve much equipment (and a stack of books works *really well* as a yoga block. I speak from experience.)

I started exercising with running outside, and then had a roommate who had weights and a pull-up bar, so I'm not as up on things that don't involve at least basic equipment.

If you're interested in strength increase, I do recommend getting at least an over-the-door pull up bar and some exercise bands at some point. just having that can vastly increase the amount of movements you can do, and it's relatively inexpensive.

Also, DDR!

I realize this is definitely a case of equipment, but it's all indoors and can be really fun. For a while I was exercising at home via DDR and a hard pad. Once you get up to a decent skill level, going through the high-bpm songs makes for an excellent interval workout.

do you have netflix? I have found that the exercise videos you can stream, particularly the dancing ones, are good.

I have bad knees and back issues. So I do a lot of swimming because it is fun and I don't end up sore afterwards.
