The so-called "golden age of RPGs" -- this supposed magical time between the late 90s and the first third of the 00s in which dozens and dozens of AMAZING RPGs came out -- is a goddamn myth.

Aside from the fact that nowhere near as many RPGs came out at that time as they did the late 80s/early 90s, they were almost all complete garbage. But neckbeards gonna neckbeard and the next thing we know shitpiles like Diablo 2, Baldur's Gate, Planescape Torment and Morrowind all get put up on pedestals they don't deserve. Fuck that.

Diablo > Diablo 2 is irrefutable fact, but it wasn't a shitpile. It was middling to decent.

Also anyone who doesn't realize that the Golden Age of RPGs was the early 90s is deficient.

Diablo 2 was g a r b a g e.

And also kinda racist.

Racist? Really? ...I admit I was way too young to think about that at the time. I didn't even realize that it was kind of weird that they made the black guy the Black Ranger and the Asian girl the Yellow Ranger until adulthood.

Go ahead: make my childhood awkward - how was Diablo 2 racist?

The little fetish enemies in Act 3 are pretty much a racist stereotype.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. So they are.

Well, at least it's still no Far Cry 3.

Agreed. The true Golden Age of RPGs was indeed the late 80's/early 90's, which brought us such gems as AD&D Second Edition, Vampire: The Masquerade, and RIFTS. Which, as as a bonus, ACTUALLY WERE ROLE-PLAYING GAMES, not computerized imitations that tried to pretend selecting from a list of canned options constitutes roleplaying.

The problem with that line of reasoning is that those rulebooks by definition add list of canned options, like "paladin" or "vampire" from which you're forced to choose, as well.

Having to choose a character class is far and away different from having to choose one of three specific responses in conversation, or one of two methods to complete a quest.

Lol, if you think your GM has an infinite number of responses ready for any given NPC, and will let you finish a quest any way you want to, I'm sad to be the one to tell you that you've been living a lie.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2014-06-09 03:28 pm (UTC)(link)
When I DMed, i never had any responses ready for any NPCs. All I had were rough ideas of their wants/ motivations/ information/characterization and maybe a few prepped lines of dialogue if they were the ones starting the conversation. Beyond that everything was basically improvisation.

I am no neckbeard, but I am laughing because you're calling all of my favorites garbage. It's just funny because it's completely an opinion and okay so you don't like that genre or age or whatever of games, but just because you didn't personally like them doesn't mean they're all garbage.

Plus there's a lot of history with that age of games and the gaming 'movement' (I don't have a better term, basically when gaming really came into focus for a lot of America and became a thing).

The only cRPG from that period that isn't complete shit is Fallout.

Maybe Deus Ex if you count it as a cRPG (I don't.)

And you know this because you've played every last one of them just to find out how much they suck.

(Seriously, did you ever reach a point where you thought "I hated every game that was like this, so I won't play this one"? It seems like you have personal experience of so many games you despise on principle.)

P.S. Come to think of it, I'd love to see you trash Avernum or Geneforge. The former pretty much WAS my childhood, at least in terms of video games, and I'm curious how you'd hate on it.

I grew up during that period so I played a lot of those games when they were new or semi-new. I didn't like them then and I don't like them now.

The problem with Spiderweb Software games is that they're grossly unbalanced. I mean, at least they didn't do realtime-with-pause, but avoiding THAT awful system is basic competency. Geneforge especially is nigh-unplayable. I didn't get more than a quarter into Avernum, either.

If they have one thing going for them though, they're not geek sacred cows, kind of falling by the wayside compared to bigger names like Planescape.

I'll grant you grossly unbalanced. Boy will I grant you grossly unbalanced. (Though I do think Geneforge deserves a little credit for being so gloriously odd. It's like Shin Megami Tensei without religion, which shouldn't even be possible, and yet somehow it exists.)

Hmm...are we talking Fallout 1 or Fallout 1 & 2, because I feel like for me it would be the latter, since I find Fallout 1 to be kinda of ok/meh.

Re: Unpopular Fandom Opinions

I disagree. Both are good games but Fallout 1 is the better game. It's more pure, less buggy, and Fallout 2 is too try-hard with the humor and is ultimately a weaker game.

Fallout 3 takes an obvious lot of inspiration from Fallout 1, whereas NV is obviously Fallout 2 2. That's at least part of why I prefer FO3 to NV.

Uh, my best friend and I are both female and we enjoyed Baldur's Gate and Morrowind. Most gamers I know loved Morrowind, regardless of gender. So no.

Haha, yeah. Same with me and my friend. Both girls, playing Baldur's Gate II was a huge part of our childhood.

Morrowind is unplayable, clunky DnD garbage. After slogging through a mountain of infodump dialogue (I guess since they didn't have voice acting they needed NPCs to speak books at you) it become obvious why racial differences suck, because they mean actually playing the race I want to play (Khajiit) is tantamount to suicide. (Also a problem with Oblivion. I am so glad they got rid of it for Skyrim.) But the thing I hate the most is the combat system, which is basically:

YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU HIT YOU MISS YOU MISS YOU MISS

which is unacceptable in a fully-3D game. I will put up with that in a 2D game with sprites like Fallout -- and only Fallout if I'm being honest -- but not here. And then, after 30 minutes of trying to kill ONE GUY, you finally succeed... and then a cliff racer sneaks up behind you and puts it up your butt.

It's not the worst game I ever played, but it's certainly the worst Elder Scrolls game I ever played. Skyrim and Arena are the only ones worth playing, and Arena wore out its welcome about 4 hours in.
