I need to buy furniture, like beds/dressers/couches/shelves/etc.

I've never been to a major furniture distributor on my own, though. I have read some reviews online but I know that doesn't always mean you won't get taken for a ride. Any tips on buying furniture without getting majorly screwed? I'm not picky about designers, but I would like something that won't fall apart after two years.

Do your homework. Research online which brands will last you the longest. Get the opinions of others. Then print out the pages and put them in a folder. Take the folder along with you when you go to a store. And make sure you have a price limit in mind before you go and no matter what stick to it. At the store, tell them up front what your budget is and that you like such and such brand and you have the paperwork backing it up.

If they see that you've done your homework they are less likely to take you for a ride.

Yeah... that makes sense. I've heard similar advice for vehicle purchases as well. Thanks.

The above comment has good advice.

Also, see if your area has somewhere that does reselling from hotels and other such places. I got a really good deal on some nearly-new bedstands and a coffee table that had been used in some sort of movie studio. You won't get as big a discount as straight-up used furniture, but it'll be in very close to pristine condition.

I'm trying to avoid bedbugs at all costs so I won't be getting any refurbished bed type furniture, but the tables sound like a good idea.

I was looking for a pair of nightstands for my room, and it was hella expensive at all the places I went to...so I comparison-shopped at thrift stores and got some pretty nice ones for 15$ each (where the stores selling them new were like 30-40 each)...they were a little banged up around the edges, but they'll have STUFF on top of them hiding nicks anyway, and I've gotten beaten-up furniture and refinished it pretty simply before. I just put them in my car but the thrift shop also had a delivery option (small surcharge) so some do that.

See, I would love to get something from a thrift shop... but part of me is paranoid that I'll end up getting something that was passed down from someone's great-grandma and is haunted, or else it'll have random bedbugs because it once stood too close to an infested bed frame. D:

But I guess that shouldn't keep me from shopping in them either, and trusting my gut instinct.

You can put a thrift-store nightstand or whatever on the sidewalk and clean it/spray it with a natural bug killer and let it sit in the sun for a day. Probably not likely you'll get bedbugs from that (and you can see them, or their signs, so you can inspect for them before you buy).

As for haunted furniture...well - some salt and a little incense and sweep it down with a new broom, you're fine.

Ghosts aren't real, so... yeah, nothing will be haunted. Who the hell haunts an end table or a desk? Bedbugs are a possibility, but I'm fairly sure thrift stores in the U.S. are legally obligated to clean the stuff they sell. You can doublecheck and ask, though.

Well, I'm one of those weirdos who likes to watch/read anything paranormal, but I have heard weird cases of inanimate objects being haunted, or at least something residual being left behind.

I probably will ask how they clean their stuff though.

Check out thrift stores, craigslist and secondhand shops for stuff like tables, end tables, etc. Obviously this will be more applicable if you're not picky about style, but it could save you some money. Often older furniture is pretty damn study even if it's not gorgeous. I bought a coffee table for $10 at Salvation Army that's really old-fashioned looking (dark wood, shelves and a cabinet underneath) but it's so solid I could stand on it without it wobbling and I am NOT a small person.

Nope, not terribly picky about style at all. Just want it to be sturdy and not easily fall apart, fit into the apartment, and not take Herculean strength to move it an inch.

Honestly? IKEA. My bedroom is full of IKEA furniture that has all lasted just fine for several years now, and the best part is that it's inexpensive and lightweight so moving with it won't be a hassle.

Well, the nearest IKEA is a six hour drive away so testing stuff is out of the question, but I'll keep it in mind if I ever move to a place that's closer.
