Though I do have to say these days the whole freak-out over AIDs is pretty-much over. People now know how to avoid it, and there is plenty of treatment to slow it down, even if it can't be cured.

Also, how does that work when his storyline was "must learn to be a decent person who is worthy of love so I can get rid of this curse that I got for being an insufferable brat"?

But since the mother looked like a teenager, the confusion is understandable.

I think the problem is that people probably jumped to conclusions about the role in the family of the blond guy in the centre. For all we know, he could be Oaken's younger brother, since Oaken is fairly light-haired as well (his beard is somewhere between blond and a light ginger).

One of the theories is that he's a brother XD

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)I think there's a very good chance Disney intended it to be a gay family, but they'll never confirm it, with the controversy. As far as I know, the director flat out said, "We know what kind of movie we made, and it's up to everyone to interpret it for themselves."

And even if they did - which, again, I doubt - a 1 second of a "may be gay character if I squint" doesn't count as representation and I don't believe Disney deserves points for it.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)That doesn't make any sense. And I can understand a lot of metaphors for Elsa's power. Being gay makes the most sense to me (conceal don't feel, born that way, people will think you're a monster, etc), or really being "different" in any way.
but mental illness? Elsa wasn't metaphorically anxious and depressed, she was anxious and depressed. Because she was hiding something that made her different. That's not a metaphor, that's what it feels to hide a part of yourself. The anxious/depressed thing was a reaction to the power, not the power itself. And it would be silly that her climactic moments are embracing her "mental illness" while ceasing to be anxious/depressed at all.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-01 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)Elsa was depressed and anxious, yes. Because of the power that she was hiding, though, not because the power itself was depression/anxiety. What I disagree with is that her ice power is a metaphor for mental illness. Any "illness" she has isn't innate, it's a reaction to the power that she's hiding, the thing that makes her different. I can see her ice power being a metaphor for a lot of things, but a mental illness reading doesn't make sense to me.
