Why on Earth am I still watching this crap?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
After reading yet another rant on how show X sucks donkey balls, I wondered why the author watches it. Many of us have done the same, hell, I watched SPN well past the point where I had lost all interest, in the vain hope that it would become the same show it was during the first seasons. That never happened and I ended up hating it. Same with reading X-Men. After those experiences I swore that I'd never do that again and have since quit as soon as I didn't like the show or series anymore.

So, what are your reasons for continuing to watch a show or read a series that you used to like but now hate? Are you still hoping that it will get better, are you hatewatching, are you following an actor everywhere they go, or are you just content with seeing shirtless men/women on screen?

I recently gave up on SPN. I watched it because, like you, I hoped it would get better. It did not. :(

I kept reading the Walking Dead comics even though I stopped enjoying them. I was hoping they would get better as well (I prefer the TV show and games now).

I gave up on the Walking Dead show somewhere during the last season, because I just couldn't get interested in the characters' fates anymore. Are the games any good? I haven't tried them yet.

The only reasons I'm still watching Korra are for Lin, Tenzin, and to see how much of a trainwreck this season will be.

Re: Why on Earth am I still watching this crap?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Do they even get enough screen time to make it worthwhile? The last I checked, Korra had quite a lot of characters.

I still watch Grey's Anatomy, a show now in its tenth(?) season that hasn't been good since possibly season 3. I don't really know why, even. Habit, maybe?

Re: Why on Earth am I still watching this crap?

(Anonymous) 2014-06-30 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that could be. If it's just a part of your weekly routine, it doesn't matter that much if it's any good.

I don't think I've ever continued a show I began to hate or got bored with. Eventually I'll go back them I see if I can finish or continue them, but if I still hate them or are bored with them, I'll drop them for good. Like, I just picked Defiance back up and I realized I do like it, so unless I get bored again, I'm going to continue watching it.

That sounds like a good approach, but I don't think that I'd manage to force myself to try again (unless something major has changed, like a new writer, cast or showrunner).

If there's absolutely nothing I enjoy, I'll stop watching.

Usually, when I keep watching something I don't like, it's because there are elements of it that I really love. But that's also the point at which I become totally ruthless about skipping episodes - if I'm only watching because of an actor I love or because of certain elements of the series, at some point, I'm not going to force myself to sit through the crappy parts. I just don't care enough.

Doesn't missing part of the plot make you lose interest even more? I guess it wouldn't matter if all the episodes are standalones, but you'd have a harder time with the main plot (assuming there is one).

I usually stop watching a show if I don't like it anymore. However, I stuck with SPN through this last season despite not loving it anymore. It was part habit, part hoping it would get better and part loyalty since I had watched it from day 1. Finally gave up though and I won't be watching next season.

It was kind of hard to admit that it wouldn't get better. Would you have watched the spin-off, if they had filmed it, or was it just as bad as the main show?

I kept reading Questionable Content long after I'd gotten sick of it. Same goes for Shortpacked. Dumbing of Age is still mostly readable but it's only going to take one more stunt by Willis to make me hit the eject button.

It's so refreshing when you drop a webcomic and within a week you can barely remember why you even kept reading it in the first place. Something within the last week reminded me of Shortpacked and it was the first time I'd thought about it in a year. It was great.

(I still read Questionable Content though, so)

Usually when I keep with something it's because I'm hoping the show/game/whatever will get back the 'spark' that intrigued me in the first place, but it doesn't often happen. If I'm getting nothing at all out of the series anymore (or if I can barely bring myself to watch/play/etc, and it starts to feel like a chore) then I'll usually drop it. No matter how much a part of me might want to stick around 'just in case'. (There aren't many exceptions, and when I do make exceptions it's usually because I like a particular character so much I watch for them. This might be me with Teen Wolf this season, if it's awful.)

Might drop Covert Affairs this season, actually, despite (mostly) liking last season. I don't feel the show sucks, but from what I understand the canon ship (that I actually like!) is off again and I'm getting really frustrated with the back and forth, and not sure I want to sit through another season of that even if the rest of the show is good.

I dropped Suits last season because I just didn't care enough. Harvey is hot, Jessica is hot, Donna is hot, but tbh very little about that show was catching my interest anymore and I was having to force myself to watch it. The same thing happened with White Collar a season or two ago (I never thought I could get tired of Matt Bomer's face, but apparently it is possible). I'm worried about next season of The Walking Dead too actually, because I thought last season was massively boring and totally disappointing.

Most of the time it's because I hate starting things and not finishing them (which I'm trying to not do anymore because there's no point in wasting time on shows I don't enjoy anymore) but sometimes I genuinely do think there's a chance it'll get back to the show I originally liked, or a particular actor/character (or a ship) is enough to keep me watching even if the rest sucks.

I sometimes can get behind watching something even though you hate large parts of it, provided you liked it when you started watching it. There might be some hope left that it'll get better again (a friend of mine hasn't lost that hope yet when it comes to Big Bang Theory, though I'd say that one has been a lost cause for some time).

What I don't get is people obsessively hate-doming a fandom. As in, spend considerable amounts of time and energy hate-stalking the fandom, whining non-stop in the fandom tags, things like that. Especially when it involves spending money - I know several people who were so ridiculously proud of themselves after going to watch one of the Twilight movies on opening night and how many people they pissed off with their loud and oh-so-witty commentary. I'm not a fan of that series either, but seriously? They have a problem. Not only did they pay a lot of money for a movie they didn't even want to watch, they also fucked up the enjoyment of people who actually wanted to watch it and paid the same amount of money (cinema tickets in my country are far from cheap). I will never understand nor like people like that.

I can keep trudging through for characters I love sometimes but often when something stops working for me I give up, SPN being the most recent case. I loved that show but I couldn't make it through season 8, and I don't think there is anything they could do to get me back at this point.

I'm also on the fence with Castle, like I'm not super-invested in that show, it's something I watch(and enjoy) with my bf so I guess when he stops wanting to watch it I will.

I usually stop watching shows if they get too terrible for me, but I actually watched the un-aired episodes of I Wanna Marry Harry online after they canceled it because it became my bad TV junk food of the summer. Thankfully it was only 8 episodes long so it was over pretty quickly but I still actively searched for the un-aired episodes and watched this terrible thing.

... Yeah, I'll see myself out.

It's a mix of sighing wistfully over how good it used to be, having a favourite character whose story I'm invested in, or having an indiotic hope that maybe if I keep watching enough I'll get to the point where things are good again. Key example, 'Heroes'. I watched that train wreck till the very end, and that was only because of how much I liked HRG (and much preferred him when he wasn't entirely central). Total load of disappointment every week, but HRG.

Same with BBC Merlin. I made the mistake of thinking they would stop hitting the reset button, and also remember what the relationships between characters would be and develop some consistency at some point lol.

Currently failing to rage quit American Horror Story even though I only happened to marathon that last month.

This was me back in the day with Glee. I had a vague hope the show would somehow get better, that it was all leading to some sort of deconstruction and that everyone would have to deal with the real world eventually... Thank goodness I quit the show mid-season two.

Oh, and pretty much every show it has been listed. It's like there's this vague hope inside of you that tells you "maybe it'll keep better if I just wait!". But then it doesn't. It never does.

I loved House for the first three seasons and then it really went downhill but I kept watching it because I want to have sex with Hugh Laurie.
