Honestly, of what I've seen a lot of the characters fall under the "not like other__" Trope. Varric, Merrill, Dorian, Iron Bull. Arguably many others.

But there are already a lot of species that have been around almost unchanged from the time of the dinosaurs (eg snakes, lizards, crocodiles, bees, frogs, salamanders, ferns, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, conifers, crabs, lobsters, clams, shrimp, corals, some types of fish) so what would even it prove to find another?

This is true. I don't watch much anime, most of it leaves me puzzled and shaking my head, but those are ones I actually saw and liked.

Attack on Titan and Tiger & Bunny are another two off the top of my head. Even anime meh-sayers like me enjoyed them.

I agree. I find it hard to empathise with the female leads who are badass from the start.

Chihiro and Sophie from Howl are two ones that it's easier to identify with (though Sophie annoys me at the end by falling for the bad boy, blame the source material).

I agree. The movie was so much better, for those reasons. Both Howl and Sophie were too cliched for me in the book. They made me groan, despite the fantastic details.

How about.. they both can exist as separate forms of animation. One doesn't need to assimilate the other, or whatever. I hate this fucking argument. CGI is popular because it's still relatively new, and doesn't carry the 'for kids' stigma of traditional animation. That will wear off. This isn't cartoon Highlander. There can be more than one.

Agreed for the most part, but pretty much everything not live action has a for "kids label" and all the popular 3DCG movies have been marketed for a general audience.
