And in turn I can't really get into the moeblob-fest that far too much manga is these days. Older manga, sure, more recent stuff? Forget it. (That goes for anime, too.)

Comics don't always have the best artists but at least I can tell the difference between one and the other still. (Though can Scott McDaniel please retire? I liked his work for Nightwing in the 90s but it just sticks out like a sore thumb these days. And I'd be okay with never seeing Juan Jose Ryp's work anymore -- nothing against him personally, but whenever I see his style it triggers flashbacks to Crossed which he did covers for. I never want to read Crossed again.)

At first glance I can't tell the difference between each square-jawed, short-haired beefcake, except when they're in costume, or their hair is different. At least with Manga it more or less depends on the series, but I've had this problem across several titles in superhero comics.

That really depends on the artist. Some artists have some real sameface going on, but a good artist knows the characters' body-types.

To be fair, Marcus To and Dustin Nguyen should just draw everything. Everyone else can retire.

Manga hasn't been really been hit with moeblob stuff that badly though. slice of life and maybe shoujo manga, sure. But other than that, not really. There's a shit ton of variety, even among recent stuff.

5/10 a couple people took it, and I almost did.

i feel that way about all superhero comics tbh. i want to get into it but the art makes me super uncomfortable. the only superhero comic i can read without this happening is the latest hawkeye one.

You should try some of Phil Noto's stuff. His Black Widow illustrations are amazing.

Manga does tend to have a fairly consistent style to which just about all its artists subscribe to. Western comics have a very diverse palette, and that is without getting into the Liefeld atrocities, so I can see where you are coming from OP. All I can say it just stick with it and try to focus more on the stories than the art, and just try to slowly acclimatize to it.

I don't know; I think there are stylistic markers in manga and in N. American/European comics that very generally speaking, if I saw an image from one or the other with little context or language cues, I'd be decent at sorting them into geographical origin. But I don't think there's any less diversity in manga art than in Western comics, though diversity in both can seem to narrow when you pick a popular genre in them to look at.

Ha, man there are some really bad eggs when it comes to western superhero comics I wont argue that, but there are also good ones as well. It really just depends on the artist and even with some of the very badly drawn ones I can get through them if they've got a good story.

But I think both art forms have their good and bad artists, I just try not to judge a comic/manga by that alone.

I dislike both genres and can't get into either, and I'm a huge comics fan.

It always disappoints me when I meet another comics book fan and I realise they mean superhero or manga stuff, neither of which fall under my radar. There's a whole other world out there besides just those two genres.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Manga's not really a genre, though. It's more like the comic output of an entire country; something like Chi's Sweet Home has zero in common with something with Number Five.

I get what you're saying, though. I'm curious as to what kind of comic are you're into.

I'll just be over here enjoying all of it.

Try older comics!

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm serious. The fugly ultra-detailed pseudo-realistic style that dominates now didn't really take off until the late 90s (personally, I blame the "wonders" of modern technology).

I agree with this. I really like 80's comics.

I'm just so tired of giant breasts everywhere.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Well move out of LA then.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
That look really exploded in the 90's. But it's slowly coming back down with each new batch of artists.

90's Superhero comics had the worst art. It made the worst modern art look like Leonardo.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-05 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh, Cape Comics.

I always called my superhero books "Tights and Fights".

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
You I never thought about it in that way but I guess I agree.

I really prefer a simplified minimalist style. I think it holds up better. I think this why I enjoy the looks of super heroes when they're animated more than in comics as well.

I think when artists draw every muscle bugling it looks ridiculous. And going to the effort of drawing faces somewhat realistic, makes sameface stand out all the more.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the way comic book art looks either. There's just something really off-putting about it to me. I tried reading Fables because I wanted to see where the stories from The Wolf Among Us came from, and I had to stop just because the art was so... ugh for me. I manage to get through The Walking Dead comics because I enjoy the franchise, but I find myself not really paying attention to the art and concentrating on the story more.

(Anonymous) 2014-07-06 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
I use to think this way. I couldn't get comics, manga was so much better, etc, etc. And then I actually began reading comics. There are a lot of varieties in art out there. Even within just Marvel there's a ton of different artists. The thing that surprised me the most is there is no general style.

Like with manga, comics involves finding a style you like the best. It's just trial and error.

The Black Widow art is completely different from the art in Hawkeye, and both are different from the art in Rocket Raccoon, which is different from the art in X-Force, which is different from Elektra, which is different from All-New Ghost Rider, etc.
